Xbox One controller no longer works
I'm running Windows 7. I have my xbox one controller with a microsoft wireless adapter. The adapter is working fine but when I turn on the controller the "XINPUT compatible HID device" under "XBOX ACC" shows with the little error sign.

The status states "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45) To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer." When I troubleshoot it, Windows can't figure out what the problem is.

The controller is synced to the adapter, yet it doesn't work. I'm assuming my controller is being seen but not being registered as a controller.

I last used my controller with the same adapter around February. It worked perfectly fine with everything. Even non-Steam games. Since then, I know for sure I've downloaded a handful of Windows updates, Avast Cleanup, and a few games (only one not through Steam), and the latest GeForce Experience driver (I'll edit with the version later, NVIDIA is acting up) I just updated to maybe 12 hours ago. I did update GeForce a few days after I found out about the controller.

I've browsed through many fixes but no one seems to have the same problem. I attempted the fixes anyways. Nothing's wrong with my drivers, they're all up to date; I've tried different USB ports but they all get the same issue; I attempted connecting the adapter and controller to a laptop running Windows 10, and it showed up as "Unknown Device." None of the laptop's USB ports even allowed the adapter to turn on.

If I find anything else out I'll keep this up to date. I'm not good with Windows 10 whatsoever, I'm a Windows 7 lover. I'm not as tech savy as I'd like to be, so thank you for the replies.

Just reinstall the driver manually. Don't auto search for driver update, that will hardly ever work.

The Win7 hotfix updates are what screws it all up; just stop updating Win7, it is pointless to do so.

There are 2 drivers, first you need to address the one for Xbox360 Wireless Adapter.
As only once this is done, can you turn on your Controller and then redo the "connect" feature and then install the actual Controller device.

This fixes the issue where the Xbox One controller isn't recongnized, and the error symbol is no longer there. Thank you for that. The thing is, anything I try doesn't recongnize that there's a controller hooked up. In big picture, Steam still doesn't see it whatsoever.
