i9 9900K worth it???

I've been thinking of upgrading my CPU.
I have a Gigabyte Z370 Gaming 7. I'm running the latest Bios available.

My Current i7 8700K can barely hit 4.5 Ghz. It needs 1.4 volt to run it stable. Yeah i kid you not. It bought 2 years ago, but i've been trying to OC it recently. But after i raised the multiplier, i notice temps in 80's and low 90's. It was settings the voltage at 1.45 volt.

So i was like no big deal. I'll just lower it down to 1.3 volt. But system crashes on start up...So went for 1.35v, still crash on startup. Finally i did 1.4, and the system booted up and was stable during stress test. But temps were in low 80's which is kinda high...And yes this is on 4.5 GHz.
On 4.3 Ghz its already using 1.35v. But temps were still reasonable during 100% load.

The lowest i could set with 4.3 GHz was 1.3v. Guess i lost the silicon lottery.
CPU Cooler is Corsair H115i RGB Platinum.

Mine will be dead by then. Since my PC i starting to act up :/ I'm getting random blue screens in games now. Something with Clock Watchdog Timeout. I quickly googled it, and its the CPU. But it runs at stock settings. I think i may have dying CPU here. I knew something was up...

There is more settings in the BIOS aside form just the core voltage to improve stability of a CPU overclock... Try putting the radiator of your cooler at the front of your case to improve cool intake airflow. Update your BIOS and then follow this video... you may not be able to hit 5.0GHz but I am very sure you can hit a stable overclock higher than 4.5GHz with that cooler!

If you follow the video and adjust other BIOS setting it will likely allow you to run a stable overclock at a lower voltage. Like your CPU Load-line calibration, CPU Current capability, or the many unneeded features you should disable when overclocking for example.

And i'll repeat again. If i lower the voltages it will crash the system. I have a bad Chip. So i'm going to head to the nearest PC store so i can figure out what's wrong. Even on Auto it shouldn't push 1.4 Volt.

Thats just an unstable OC, try it at 4.4ghz. What voltage are you using?

Never put it on auto, ever. Otherwise it will push 1.4v all modern i7 will do that if you leave vcore on auto.

There's no way any motherboard would put 1.4v on any cpu with stock speeds. Thank god it wasn't a motherboard issue.

But there is nothing wrong with 1.4v on 7700k or 8700k. Just that we usually recommend folks take it off auto and turn the voltage as low as you can while stable, it helps with heat. The 9th gen just doesn't have that issue is all.

Make sure you update your bios

Those CPU is known to have high temp. Have a i7 6700 K and a i7 8700 K myself and the heavy load temp is 70 c - 80 c. 6700 k goes to 4,2 GHz and 8700 k goes to 4,7 GHz. If you dare:
Those should be delided and 9900 K too.
4,2 GHz - 4,5 GHZ with 4 cores and over 8 threads is alot and can drive a GPU,(High end) 1080 ti to 2080 ti perfectly fine if you are gaming. In fact it is overpower for gaming.
i9 9900 K gives you only at most 10 - 15 FPS extra in gaming and the 8 cores and 16 threads only gives you extra power in streaming. There are few games who support so many cores and threads so...

I have my 6700k oc’ed to 4.4GHz and under load I typically get around 65°C single core, 55°C single core under heavy load. Of course I have a standing style CPU cooler (Arctic Freezer 13CO)...not sure what temperatures a stock cooler would yield though...

Use hwmonitor. those cpu does not gives you 60 c under heavy load. Then I mean a AAA game f.ex.
You have to delidde those cpu then.

If you ask me, unless you're prepared to face the heat 9900Ks will produce, stay away from it, even 360 AIOs

Intel's 14nm is clearly not designed for more than quad cores; the reason why they're releasing 6 and 8 cores, is because of the competition heat from AMD.

8700k is still okay. If you're just purely gaming, going to the 9900k is a pretty bad thing to do, let alone the 9700k.

You may wanna consider sending your CPU away for delidding. I delidded mine for a 20C improvement. Had an okay chip, did 5Ghz at 1.30V LLC5 after delidding.

You can lookup for guides. Plus, do not use auto overclock settings; they suck and they put too much heat.

You will also need to spend some time binning your CPU to ensure it's stable, depending on your luck with the silicon lottery.

unfortunately i broke my CPU by adding too much voltage to it. It was kinda a bad chip since day one.

If had known i would have replace it right away.

Make sure you update your bios

1.4v for 4.5 GHz is kinda high. Most people need that kind of voltage when they're pushing the clocks beyond 4.9 or 5 GHz. The 9700K they tesed in the store needed 1.150v, and that was on auto. I'm aware that you can push the voltages lower when doing it manually. But my i7 8700K couldn't do lower than 1.3V on stock clock speeds.

But they allowed me lend the i7 9700K for a small fee for about a week, so i can test out if the motherboard isn't bad either. If the motherboard is indeed bad too, yes i'm afraid i need to change everything :/
