Opinion on ethernet cables [answered]
Long version in bold short version in italics

Currently my computer connects to the modem via wifi - this works well enough for general web browsing but my ping is upwards of 50 for local servers and upwards of 250 for other servers leading to lag, at least when the home internet is functioning idealy (normal: shared internet with around 7 devices) with a direct path going through two walls and the kitchen nearby.

Seeing as my computer remains in one place for over 99% of the time I was thinking in getting some ethernet cables whick could also counter the wifi stick malfunctioning every so offen.

From my quick research generaly higher number = higher potentional speed along with a few other possble additional features so I'm thinking cat 6 should be more than enough without being to expensive.

I figure this will reduce my ping / lag to the point where playing games online may be more doable occassionly (I have played terraria with a friend and regardless of who hosts there is lag and don't get me started on torchlight 2).

I have found some generic Cat 6 20M cable avalible at a local store and was wondering in your experence is it worth using a brand name cable over a generic cable in this situation ?

Is generic cat 6 cable better than wifi ?

Just get CAT5E or 6E; E is much better shielding.

There is no brand; just ensure its an "E" cable and it'll be fine.

Yes always use Ethernet Cable for Gaming PCs.

Thanks Bad_Motha.

Anyone else have an opinion ?

Even CAT5E is enough for current use, there is no internet speed that it could push even those to their maximum potential.
About brands, well I would not buy the noname stuff but also not the overpriced stuff where you pay 80-90% of it just for the brand. You can find some decent brands for a few dollars.

Astraea Kisaragi, Would you say something thats around $1 per meter would be reasonable price wise ?

I would say yes, if it has proper shielding and doesn't looks it was made on knees in some hidden chinese village.

I use metal head DataCom 1,5 m cables which costed arround 2€ for 1,5m. In work we have set up a new switch for which we paid 2 USD per cable for the 3m flat ones.

Thanks to both Bad_Motha & Astraea Kisaragi for the assistance.
