Maybe Steam should start acting like GoG and bit like Epic?
This is my opinion, not facts, take it or leave it!

Now isn't it true that Epic Games as all hate has been benefitting PC gamers? Rather than console exclusives we finally get PC exclusives? Something Steam should've done years and years ago!
GoG with DRM, the issue with DRM is you have the right to play, not the right to own, which means they can update a game and render it completely useless just for laughs/fun, now they wouldn't do that, probably, but they can update the game to a level where you don't enjoy it anymore.

I can't see Steam winning this battle, not even with Half-Life 3, which is likely an answer to this battle. Without it we wouldn't even see HL3

To all you epic haters I get it, but I personally am glad that we finally get a company that tries to defy console exclusives, even if only by a year. I wish no one use exclusives at all. Gamers for gamers, the more we play the more the interest increases and the more all win, but it's all too greedy now. I do believe in that formulae though.

Maybe use exclusives yourselves? Stop with this DRM restrictions that makes or will make people to hate you? Maybe I am one of few, but I'm sure this issue will grow and grow.

Just my suggestion, take it or leave it.
Any person who just shoots this down as nothing is a rude person as I did take my time writing this! I understand if you don't agree.

You don't see Steam winning the battle, yet Steam is growing. You name GoG, yet they're a small fish because of their no DRM policy. Epic has all kinds of exclusives, yet their growth is marginal.

Reality is different from your observations.

The majority of gamers don't actually have an issue with DRM, exclusives or any of the things gamers like to complain about on social media. The majority simply plays their games and buys them where they want to buy them.

I don't see it, also why I see why we finally get HL3. They are growing which would be natural but are they growing as before? Not losing growth? In consideration world is growing too, especially China etc.
And the DRM is more of a future problem, as I mentioned but I can understand that you and many many others can't see it yet.

Epic burned about half a BILLION US Dollars last year on exclusive rights and giveaways.
And yet, customers spend a pitiful amount of actual money that year.

Even Epic admits it will take years before their store will break even.
They are financing the whole thing with Fortnite, if that well dries out, it will take everything with it.
Just because "you" don't "see it" doesn't mean what you believe is true.

Epic is certainly not a goal to aspire to. GoG has its place but this ain't it.

Steam is still the very very clear 'winner' of the game distribution and update market, for a compelling reason. While I will never say any company is "too big to fail", Steam isn't *freaking stupid* like Epic, or 'willing to bend rules' like GoG.

To break even is one thing. But to earn money over ti me in a long run is another. Also fairly sure they knew it before they started, Sweeney included ofc.

What is your take on DRM? That the company can change your game however they please? You don't own a copy? Not even the game version?

What does DRM have to do with either licensing or patching software?

Let's say you own Conan Exiles, and they update it frequently. They made updates online mandatory while you enjoyed playing it single player, also made it harder for single players. Now you rely on modding even more, to the extent that it's not even the same game. Luckily the game is moddable in this case. All games are not moddable.
This is one point for DRM free which I think will matter in future, it matters to me already.
edit: I was unclear, they updated the game so that even if you are playing single player or not you have to be online (mandatory)

That has been a debate on Steam for the past decade (or even longer).

It's quite simple, the license you get doesn't cover modding. Modding is 3rd party, often unsupported and at your own risk.

Unless laws regarding licensing change, there is no reason for stores or game developers/publishers to change it.

That said, there are games on Steam that are DRM free, but that's a developers/publishers choice. DRM is not mandatory on Steam.

Edit2: the license doesn't change at all you have the right play the game.
The patch is still the new game and your 120 hours save is forfeit. I would say this is similar to, we made a new agreement, we will take over your house, and you will get sleep in the basement. While we are watching you constantly.
Bit rough/cruel comparison but.. Why not :)
Well I still think it's a matter that is drawing more and more peoples attention. I could be wrong of course. Maybe HL3 would've been released anyway.
Don't know why edit made me quote myself but whatever.
In truth my post was about trying to make you see grey, rather than black and white.
Epic has it's bad ♥♥♥♥, but you aren't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about sony? xbox? Just epic? The one part that does exclusives for PC?
I'm not saying Sweeney is correct, or ♥♥♥♥ but maybe see it for what it is? A market business in a world where money is everything? Maybe if you are a PC gamer you would agree that it is nice with PC exclusives too? As it's all about money? Steam wouldn't be here if they didn't earn money too. In truth you wouldn't have any friends about if you didn't earn money too? Or they would be friends with you when you are on the street?, tossing a dollar or two? No No they would let you sleep on their couch forever! That's what friends are and do.

Only my point, and yes, steam is losing, I'm sure people are willing to pay for freedom... If not yet they will..
:negative1:

Exclusivity via buying someone else’s creation in order to compete in a market, in place of actual innovation, should be discouraged and rooted out in all forms in any economy that wishes to be free or innovative. Otherwise everyone becomes owned, no enterprise is free, and innovation dies.

Can you just translate that to normal english rather than me wasting time trying?

Edit: Can't believe I bothered reading that... drunk as ♥♥♥♥ even! But in a way yeah but I think there is more to innovation than that.. but again drunk AF. Not native english either. Innovation won't ever die though, can be silenced.
Edit 2. Also possible I got it wrong, Im not good with moronic texts like that. Yes it takes a moron to read it. I bet a real moron's writing would be easier.

This world today only cares for money. if you enjoy that steam and it's rules have all rights over your game, then just keep paying them. When you realize your game was taken from you by an update, unplayable, no longer fun, remember this post :)
You can also remember this if you are an exclusive hater, as xbox and Playstation have been doing that for years, and far worse than epic ever did. If epic is bad? Sony and Xbox etc are the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ devil
