Help! Steam freezes my computer!
After returning from my 3 week vacation in Mongolia, my Steam started freezing my computer when I open it, requiring me to hard reset each time. It's not just steam, it's the whole machine, the clock doesn't work and Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't do anything. My computer's hardware also starts working really hard. No other program does this and the computer works fine as long as I don't open up steam. Avast! had steamservice.dll marked as a virus but I restored and put in an exception for Steam in Avast! I also re-installed steam and the issue still persists, but now it auto starts when I start my computer.

Right now when I boot up my computer a window pops up saying "Installing Steam Service" and I'm worried to click cancel or install service because when I click cancel it signs me in and steam works fine for like 30 seconds and then my computer freezes like before. I'm not sure what will happen when I click install service. I looked at other threads and I don't have any Creative software installed. I also tried solutions in Support like disabling auto start for all non MS programs and deactivated my Anti-Virus. Please help me!

To clarify my computer only freezes when I open up steam and press cancel when it says installing steam service. Last time I pressed Install Service the window stopped responding and I manually closed Steam processes from Task manager. Right now Installing Steam Service is just sitting on my desktop waiting to be clicked.

EDIT: I let it download steamservice. Still freezes.

EDIT 2: This has nothing to do with your games having giant lag. This literally forces me to have to hard reset my computer when it happens, if you can't help or don't have the exact same serious issue don't post.

The client does not have a serious problem. Your PC has a problem. Have you tried refreshing your Steam files?

Run chkdsk with the /f and /r options on the boot drive and on the drive where Steam lives.
What would that do?

It helps verify data on your drives.

Run CHKDSK /F from a Command Prompt window (as Admin)
It will ask to schedule on next start up, click yes and then restart Windows.
Once CHKDSK is done, and you're back at Deskop, Defrag your drive(s).

After that, go to your Steam folder; keep Steam.exe and the SteamApps folder and delete the rest of the contents in the root Steam folder. Once done, rerun that Steam.exe in the folder and it will redownload the Steam Client files fresh again. SteamApps has your games/tools, so none of that should be touched.
