I have some problems with any game resolution options..

Hey there!
It might be not be steam's concerns, but i need some help. So my problem is, i have downloaded a mmorpg game before, not from steam. The resolution on my 19inch screen was full, and i could not change it. So anyways, when i launched any game in steam, the resolutions changed. When i change it to 16:9 with 1280x720, then it is awfuly full on my screen, before it was always like the top and the bottom was black a little bit, it wasn't full on my screen the game.
I hope you can understand what i'm saying.
So after that i realized this problem, i tried to change for example in teamfortress 2 the grapichs to 16:10 then back to 16:9, but it is still awfuly covers my full screen. I cannot afford any other screen at the moment, so don't suggest me to buy 22inch monitor instead that 19inch monitor i'm using right now. Anyways, i did tried in other games, L4d2, NoMoreRoominHell, Skyrim etc. But they are in the 16:9 was full covered my screen.
I don't know why is this, i tried in the mmorpg game that i said before to change resolution, but it was alawys on full screen. I did delete the game, restart my computer but in game my screen is full covered in 16:9 1280x720. I don't know what to do now. It is really annoying.

sorry i dont fully understand what you are saying. try set your desktop resolution to

1280x1024-----5:4 --------------------- (square shape monitor) [_]

1280x720-----16:9 --------------------- (rectangle shape monitor) [___]

1280x800---16:10 --------------------- (rectangle shape monitor) [__ ]

what is the make and model of your monitor? mine = HP W19

Okay, so my monitor name is Samsung SyncMaster 932BF Monitor i think. This is what happens when i'm changing my resolutions:
1280x1024 --- (square shape monitor) [_]
1280x720 --- (square shape monitor) [_]
1280x800 --- (square shape monitor) [_]
It is always square monitor, but under 1280x1024 it is awful to watch, i mean it's like in 1280x720 it is awfuly tries to fit in the whole screen.

I cannot choose to my desktop to be 5:4 or 16:9 or 16:10

1280x1024 is the native resolution of that monitor. Use that.

sorry i did not explain very well .
because i did not know what monitor you had i suggested 3 different resolotion options so you could choose the one that best matched what monitor you have.

I could do before that i choose 16:9 and 1280x720 and it was fitting in the middle of my screen ingame.

so you actually want to have black bars at top and bottom of your screen?

so it looks widescreen on square monitor

Yes, i want it to be like that, it was for a long time, but now some reason it changed, it is on my whole screen. I don't want it to be like that, i'm keep trying to make it like that again. But it does not want to work. I don't want to play game with this square screen..

try running the games in windowed mode. rather than full screen

My desktop was always full screen, in 1280x1024. It is looks fine, but ingame i always want it to be at least 1280x720 with 16:9. Because then the top and the bottom part is black and the game in the middle of my screen.

Yeah, with windowed it is working, but i don't like to have my desktop at the background too :/

for that i have no idea.technically that is not a problem that is how it should be.

In your monitor menu you can choose how the picture fills the screen.
For EACH resolution on its own.

Not all monitors offer such options. Mine doesn't. But my videodriver (nVidia) does offer such options in the nVidia Control Panel.

Okay, it's working now finaly like it was before! ^^
It was a little bit tricky, because when i changed my desktop to 1280x720 it was in fullscreen like a square shaped monitor. BUT i did go to advanced options then to properties in my vga and it was on 1280x1024 60hz, i've changed it to 1280x720 60hz. Then my desktop was in 1280x720 and the bottom and the top was black like i wanted it ingames, so i tried in games and it worked, it was rectangle shape monitor ingames now, so then i chaged not there where i can change the hz as well, just in the regural screen options to my desktop to be 1280x1024. And now it is my desktop how i like it this square shaped monitor, and in games it is 1280x720 now!

well i just came here cuz i accidentally held fn then pressed space so then it went all weird then i did it again so then it would be my preferred resolution but my game was in a square. Thanks guys for helping me!
