Never use wallet funds for game purchase
I can't believe they still haven't fixed this.. I never want to use my 1,46€ in the wallet to pay for a 70€ game. Stop asking me (in fact, you're not even asking me, you're doing it deliberately and in a dishonest manner..)

The 5€ I occasionally put in there I'll buy some cheap backgrounds or whatever for, not pay for entire games. It's obvious to me that this happens in the background by default (never clearly displayed) so that we'll re-fill the wallet in additional purchases.

Huge L to Valve for being sneaky and scammy in this way. This has been complained about since at least 2015.

A lot of stores add in any store credit to the transaction. This is simply an implementation choice, and lot of people prefer that it be auto applied rather than having to manually apply it. Either implementation is fine. Assigning a bunch of emotion, intent and malice to it is the story in your head, not reality.

Being so sneaky, doing things that are clearly visible unless you're shopping blind folded...

It's not visible, I make regular purchases on here and I miss it often. It should just be easy to opt out of using wallet permanently. As of now this is how it works;

1. Select pay by card
2. (wallet is still chosen by default, as an additional payment method, without approval)
3. Click next and before making the card mfa authorisation, check if it says "wallet funds + card"
4. Press "back"
5. Choose "Use card"
6. Click next
7. Now click for card mfa prompt and finalize the purchase.

It's deliberately misleading.

I agree. I fell for this a few times myself, until I was short on any market purchases because I had mistakenly already spent the funds without even realizing it...

Also, assuming the intended purchase is at least $5/€5/whatever-they-use-for-your-currency, you could buy wallet funds for exactly the needed amount, and pay with just wallet.

Augmented Steam adds a custom amount option to the wallet purchase page, but I'm sure there are explanations somewhere how to do it without a browser plugin,

Nice, missed the point entirely...
