For the protection of the account holder, this purchase has been declined. Further purchasing will be temporarily limited - please contact Steam Support to resolve this issue.
As title. I'm getting this message any time I try to use Paypal or my steam wallet to make a puchase. Still seem to be able to use my card, but I have £35 in my steam wallet and funds in paypal that I'd rather be using.

I have contacted support, over 48 hours ago, nothing but a bot has replied to me so far.

Any idea what has triggered this state and what I cn do to fix it, short of waiting for the overloaded support ticket system to finally get to me? (took 3 days to get a refund on a pre-order).

Very unhappy about this right now :(

I had this happen last year during the summer sale. It seems to be based on spending a large amount in a short time. It took them about 8 days to get back to me. I provided the information they requested, and within 2 days, they removed the limitation.

Seriously? Because I've spent a load of money? Been made redundant, am on garden leave from the old job until 24th July, am starting a new job early June.... Right now I've had a load of payout from the redundancy and the 7 weeks that they're paying me to not work my mandatory leave period. Nothing to do until the security clearances come through for the new job and a load of time on my hands to catch up on great games..... So from what you're saying I'm not going to be able to buy any more games until pretty much the time when I won't have time to play them anymore.

Who the hell locks their customers out of the store for spending too much money? There's a global economic downturn, I'm throwing money at my screen and steam is refusing to sell me stuff....

Thank ♥♥♥♥ I already pre-ordered killer is dead and watchdogs, also wildstar headstart to keep me busy as well. Just sickens me that there's £35 sitting there and I can't get something I want with it. Consumerism has hit an all time low :(

From what I can tell, it is like what a bank will do if to many big transactions are made on the account. It is fraud protection from what I can tell. Doesn't make it any easier to deal with, I know.

Yeah, I've had my debit card cloned a few times :( The difference being is that the bank actually tell me exactly what's going on, refund any fraudulant transactions straight away and issue a new card in a couple of days. Steam support haven't even told me what's going on aside from that it's for my own protection... The only protection I need from myself at the moment is from stopping my bum from getting as big as Gabe Newell's from sitting on the sofa playing too many games, lol.

It did actually let me use my wallet funds to buy a game last night, so maybe it's a restriction on how much I can spend over a period of days.... It's just that new games tend to start a cycle of "Get cards, make badge, get money off voucher for interesting looking game, buy interesting looking game, play game, get cards.... etc"

I can still buy trading cards, haven't tried selling them though.. Might try it with a couple of dupes to see if that's restricted.

Only support can tell you the reason for the message. (One reply's conjecture is pretty much meaningless.)

I have now had a reply from a Real Person. Seems that it was an automated trigger based on my recent game buying spree. Have given them all the information they requested and also a synopsis of the garden leave and new job scenario to put my game buying into context. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.... Clearly steam needs to hire more support staff though :hoji_sad:

Unfortunately all you can do is contact steam support and wait 3-5 days for a real human to get back to you :( It's ♥♥♥♥ but it's the only way.

You need to follow your instructions.

If it says contact steam support, then contact steam support … then you wait.
