Updating games is a IO heavy task.
The only real updates that my PC needs are a better graphics card, and a heftier amount of space for my main HDD, which I am working to acquire.
You should have about 2-3 times the game size as free space for the update process.
SSDs also perform slower when almost full, so, for optimal performance, clear up some space.
I know that with some games it's like that, as it is with ESO, the updates took forever even when my games were quick to download. It's been happening with more than just this one game, but only with my steam ones. EA, Epic, and just browser downloads have been fine. (And yes, I do uninstall them when I'm done with them lol)
I'm uninstalling a few large games that I don't see myself playing any time soon to see if that can help. Thank you both for the answers, at least I'm not running in blind anymore!
Generally speaking, adding a whitelist in your anti-virus for any steam directories and libraries will improve update speeds, as anti-virus generally is the largest hold up
