Steam activation code timer

Apparently i made too many activation attempts trying to input a gift guard (wasn't told this but told to keep trying) until i changed the place i was entering it, now it says it wont accept it because I've made too many attempts recently, how long do i have to wait to figure out whether i got duped by the idiot at the register?

You only need to input the code correctly one time. It will tell you if it's valid or not.
Make sure O(scar) are Os and 0 (Zero) are zeroes and to distinguish between 8 and B. Though I haven't had problems with their font yet.

Putting in the same code multiple times doesn't get you anywhere.

^The cooldown is exactly 60 minutes. Dont try to enter it again before that, it will just reset the cooldown.

does format matter like do i need to type exactly AAAAA-BBBBB-CCCCC or can I just AAAAABBBBBCCCCC?

if i beef it again after the 60 minute period, do I need to wait another 60?
