Steam is Capping DL speeds in some regions
FYI. If you are having slow DL speeds with steam and already confirmed with a speedtest its not a local issue (your PC or ISP) I would suggest switching your region to France.

I tried a lot of servers in US and Canada but DL speed remained the same. Around 20MB/s even though I get 330+Mb/s from ISP. Now that I switched to Paris, France my speeds are back to 35+MB/s.

I strongly believe a lot of regions are being capped to save bandwidth during the Pandemic. So if you're having trouble change server to France. I guess not a lot of people are using enough bandwidth to merit a cap there.

Wish I did this sooner as I noticed this when they started to delay game updates to later dates with the Pandemic. I guess they have capped DL speeds too for bandwidth reasons.

Edit.

Steam is not capping. Fixed using VPN. Waiting for ISP call back.

There was even an official announcement about exactly that due to the pandemic.

Yeah , and then it go up for you, that you just move your problem to France. and all steam user is part of the problem. you might say every user on earth is the problem then they have rights to switch and cause other Region with the issue, and now you get it why VPN is a issue on Global scale.

i could say steam need to turn off that option and use nearest or next nearest 4 direction max router path to get to diffrent steam server then some area need expansion to cover it.

just because i can see the problem and know it dont mean its that simple for steam to change, but hey , maybe steam need a CCIE that can explan a thing or 2 about network and its topology change.

Did they? I only read about them delaying game updates. I tried to google it and searched the forums here before I posted but didnt see anything. Well, at least that explains it.

You're right, there were no words about acutal throttling. I mixed things up there.

If they are throttling than it does make sense but a bit of an inconvenience. I guess if my speeds get slow again ill try to find another region. It is nice to shave off almost half the time to DL a game though.

Certain download sources getting slower ain't news. Changing the download server being the solution to slow downloads has been a solution over a decade ago.

Yes, of course, but steam actually capping regional bandwidth now is new. At least for me. I never had any issues with my region and was always above 35MB/s DL speeds.

No big deal. We will just have to deal with it until things get better. Lots of other things to be more concerned about anyways.

Well, I had to change my download region to NOT get abhorrently slow downloads ~6 years ago.

Steam doesn’t throttle downloads

Steam can obliterate your connection if it wants to

yay thx a lot, now from kb to MB again. xD

lastet steam update (october 2020) brought us throttling by default unless you are going to change it. check options.

removing the throttling isnt sufficent enough, you need a download location your country usually does not use like azerbaijan or something similar.

only at this case you have full download speed.

considering that you could get past 20MB/s is a blessing.. I'm sitting at 5MB/s max

It didn't. At least not for me.

I can say that this is sadly still an issue years later. If I change my region DL speeds increase. From ~20MB/s to almost 40MB/s. My connection is solid and can always DL without issue from other sites, platforms.

I also find sometimes the region defaults back to my native server area. Which is quite annoying.

If anyone is on fiber I feel bad for you. It would almost make having that bandwidth pointless. These caps are terrible.
