Pinning function on right click menu of taskbar icon no longer available
I used to use this function all the time, but now I cannot find it anywhere, and even some of my games that I had pinned have vanished from the list.

What I'm talking about is the icon that shows on your taskbar when Steam is running. When you right click on it, a long menu pops up, and at the top are pinned games.

I can no longer find the way to pin games to this list.

Is anyone else having this issue and/or can you help me find how to do this? It used to juse be a routine thing for me. :/

I'm wondering if the recent major patching accidentally removed this function.

You're talking about this? (Left 4 dead 2 pinned)

Once, this stopped working for me too. All I did was "Unpin this program from taskbar", exit steam, restart steam and re-pin it back to the taskbar, then start the game I'd like to play. Quit the game and it should be in the 'recent' list. If you hoover over the game, a 'pin' should appear on the far right.

Thanks for your help. While this did not fix it, it did help lead me to the cause.

What seems to be happening which I overlooked because I'm just accustomed to not having any issues, is that my list was no longer showing a recent games list. It was only showing the pinned list, and I did still have one game pinned there.

So, I decided to try unpinning this last game, and the instant that I did, the rencent list reappeared in the menu. Now, when I select a single game to pin from that list, the problem reoccurs, removing the recent list and replacing it with the pinned list, so I'm now unable to pin more than one game at a time.

This must be a bug from one of the recent patches because I never had this issue until perhaps a couple months ago. I'll file a bug report with Steam.

Thanks again! :)

You could try using CCleaner to clear out the 'cache'.
(download : https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/download/standard )

That 'may' fix your problem.

Not sure wich setting it is, I guess it's the 'taskbar jump list' or 'menu order cache' , but to be sure I just share my entire configuration for CCleaner.

I have another brand installed. I'll give it a try, but I'll download CC too. I know that's a popular one, thanks. Ftr, I just filed a ticket, I'll see what they say.

Actually, I recall doing a direct Steam cache clean awhile back. I looked up an article on it. I"ll try that again too.

It's interesting that that worked, this is what I had to do:

I've never used that feature I usually go to view > small mode and launch my games from there. Could it be that that right-click menu has a limit of how many links can be added to it? I'd assume it probably does and if you kept adding to it maybe when it was trying to add the new ones, since it was out of space to put anything else there due to it's limits, it deleted one to add one and it would have most likely deleted the oldest one if that's the case.

I never got it fixed actually, although now I seem to have stumbled upon an unknown possible fix.

The new posts to this thread reminded me to take another whack at it, so, I started by unpinning two programs which I somehow managed to get pinned again.

This then left me with no pins and no recent list etiher. Bizarre. I then went to the shortcut in the start menu and was reminded that there is actually a totally separate pinned list there. It is not synced with the taskbar pinned list.

Anyway, I decided to explore the suggested of not enough room on the list, so I bumped my res. up to 19x10. At some point in all this fiddling and restarting Steam, it has now fixed the problem, so I'm seeing a full recent list and a full pinned list, although there does seem to be a limit of about 6 items total between the two.

.....hang on. I had just tested 19x10, then 10x7 and now back to 12x7, and it was showing the full list in each res., but now as I'm typing this I went back to the taskbar and the entire list is GONE! :/

Something I did in just the last few minutes has triggered the bug again!

Well, I'm going to play around a bit and see if I can pin it down, and then I'm going to try the shortcut replacement suggestion and see if that does it.

I already made one support ticket over this and they said they would pass it along, but if we can pin this thing down, then I'll fill out a new one and pass the fix along. I'll report back when I have more info.

Small update: I just restarted Steam and both the taskbar menu and the start menu lists are gone, so it's not just affecting the taskbar list.

Ok, new update. Bad news.

This bug now appears to be random, or just too tough to pin down. I've hopped back and forth between ultra high and low res and here's basically what I've found:

Almost every time, changing res. will get the lists to reappear, but:

* They don't stay for long. After a very short bit they disappear again.

* Both lists seem to change randomly, showing a different mix of my chosen items each time. So if I have 6 pinned progs, sometimes it will show all 6, sometimes 1&2, sometimes 3&6. or any combination it feels like. And again, both the taskbar and start menu lists seem to be separate and show a different random mix each time.

I have restarted multiple times throughout all of this to no avail.

I have tried the replacement shortcut fix and this did not work for me.

So, I'm back to square one. I now recall that one can do a relatively easy Steam client reinstall by deleting a few files, but I'll have to go look that up again. Maybe that will work.

Just downloaded a fresh client and let it reinstall. Immediately after, both lists are empty. Then I changed to high res., and the start menu list shows up but taskbar list is still empty.

You apparently didn't read what I said or you're somehow failing to either accept or comprehend that that list has limits. You are going beyond it's limit. It's not possible to have as many "pins" (links) there as you're putting there. That's why they are disappearing.
You're putting too many links in the bootstrapper. It can only have so many there.

It's empty after re-installing because it refreshed and defaulted to empty, because you haven't re-installed any games. Once you install some games they will re-appear in that list.

No, I read you loud and clear, but I guess I wasn't clear in my post.

Whether I'm in 10x7 or 19x10, when it's working right, the list will show my 6 pinned games, and in the higher res'es, there's plenty of room to spare, so the issue for me is not a spcae issue, or an issue of internal limits, i.e. if it shows 6 pinned some of the time, then it should show the 6 all of the time.

If you look at my earlier posts, you will see I was having an issue with just getting one or two games pinned.

Just downloaded a fresh client and let it reinstall. Immediately after, both lists are empty. Then I changed to high res., and the start menu list shows up but taskbar list is still empty.

The client reinstall did not wipe out my library.. It doesn't work like that. It keeps your library and settings. All I had to do to get one of the lists working was change my res. This is not about space, it's an erratic bug.
