xbox one controller to windows 8.1
I bought a new xbox one wired controller to use with steam, but steam doesn't recognise the controller. My laptop shows that the controller is connected and working properly after getting the driver for it. Steam insists that there is no controller connected. Do I have to upgrade to Windows 10?

Hi,

I see that you may be having a problem connecting your controller.
(Restart your computer before trying this)
I would suggest checking to see if the controller drivers are up-to-date.

First Navigate to Windows icon in the bottom left corner > right click > Device Manager > Navigate to the bottom and see if "Xbox Peripherals" shows up.
If so left click the drop down then RIGHT click on "Xbox Gaming Device" and select update drivers.

Note: Make sure your computer is up to date with all the latest updates; Also check that your antivirus Is turned off.

Hope this helps.
How do you connect?

Why should it be off?

During the time of your response I had noticed the latest updates for my laptop had not been done. I have completed said updates now, turned off my antivirus and checked the device manager.

One thing I find strange is that it says "Xbox 360 peripheral" when the controller itself is an Xbox one/windows 10 controller. Could that mean I have the wrong driver for it or is my laptop just loopy?

The controller is connected by USB 2.0.
Windows should load the right driver.

Does the controller work for games if you disable the things in steam controller settings?
