What is steam maximum download speed ?
I have a gigabit connection and should be downloading a 120MB/s or 96 maximum download speed Steam limit?

unless you are downloading to an ssd raid0, your storage devices will cap the download speed due to on-the-fly decompressing at some point. download speed will vary depending on the game because of that.

Steam has no real limit other then the network limitations of the servers. you can get higher then a gigabit.

I have the samsung 850 EVO 500gb no raid. Just that one drive. I only get 60MB/s max but normally around 45MB/s while downloading here. Shouldnt I be getting much higher than that? I mean i get higher if i transfer files from USB 3.0 to SSD. I get around 105MB/s while doing that. So my drive can obviously handle more than 60MB/s

EDIT now im downloading from Bethseda the ESO and im getting 117 MB/s

Through what ISP do you have the 1000 Mbps through? I need those kinds of speeds

Download speed seems to be all over the place. Theoretically, we should max out at about 125MB/s. I think the best I've seen Steam sustain is closer to 60, though, and 30 is more common. Sometimes its worse than that.

You can actually change where you download data from but I haven't had much luck changing that around.

Google Fiber for the win! ;)

Verizon instant is just the same.

Steam's CDN can obliterate even gigabit connections. Steam ahs no issue filling your pipe

Bottle necks are going to be

1) disk usage
2) Cpu usage to check the downloaded chunk, decompress the chunks sent from steam and combine them back into the desired file

Aka look at your performance monitor and you'll likely see #1 and #2 capping out

If that was the case then why was I getting 115MB/s downloading from BEthsedas website then? Im using the same equipment etc. This is 100% steams issue not my comptuer or my ISP or internet etc. Steams downloasd are all erratic up and down instead of a good solid stream. When my connection was 3 MB/s the connections was constant and strong. Now its all erractic dropping down to 8 MB/s then up to 60MB/s then settling aroudn 45MB/s most of the time.

choose another steam download server that is far from being congested. and as said, on-the-fly decompression what Steam does is hard on your storage devices.

for the rest of the world, Google Fiber and some other small tryhards.
for japan, every provider since 10 years, it is a standardized service named hikari. end consumers limit today is 2gbit down/1gbit up. less then 100bucks per month + setup fee, which got lower over time. about 150 bucks now in more rural areas. all prices are government regulated so providers can't scam people.

to be frank. japan uses over-ground "wiring" and it looks ugly as crap[www.google.com], it should get its own subreddit, but it is fast to install.

So basically then unless you have RAID setup you cannot get more than 60MB/s? Since i cant go above that with steam but I can with otehjr downlading websites. Since peopel are saying that its unlimited but because of the way steam installs and downloads at same time. This dosnt make much sense to me since it doesnt happen at lower speed internets jsut higher speeds and speeds that are not max lmits for my drive or my internet connection either

Also, How do i change downlaod servers on steam?

I'm a bit late to the discussion but the reason you're getting faster speeds from the Bethesda website is probably because their download's arent compressed as much if at all. If the files aren't compressed your cpu barely has to do any work so the bottleneck is your hdd/sdd. And since most hdd's in released in the past 5 years are able to handle close to or gigabit speeds your download peak's at about 115mb/s wich is the limit of your internet speed because Google Fibre is a bit slower then gigabit most of the time.

I have 306/300 fibre line, steady 4ms ping, and Steam maxed out that easily on SSHD..

The speed limit is above 306/300 line.
Yes, my ISP gives extra speed so noone can complain.

Anyone with 1000 or 10.000 who checked?

You could set the steam priority to High on desktop, and that particular download, set that too at High but on Steam. Like that i think it'll be quicker

I have Gigabit over a Cat 7 ethernet cable with a 7700k and only get ~10mbps I've tried turning up packet size and a bunch of other things but it doesn't work Help!

Gigabit internet line and only 10.MB/s on Steam?

Steam uses ~100% of capacity on my 300/300 line.

It takes me ~4 minutes to download 10.GB on Steam to SSHD..
My line also maxes out on Uplay and Origin.

I have a 960 Evo, an 8700k, and a 1000/1000 line. I don't get more than 75MB/s downloads from steam even when my speed test shows 950mb/s. My task manager says neither my SSD nor my CPU are over 30% usage during this time. Has anyone figured this out yet? i would like that extra 30MB/s download speed haha.
