Source Engine Licensing
Hello everyone! I'm not sure if this is the correct section to ask this, if not please tell me where the correct section is. I have questions about the Source Engine licensing. I heard that in order to make a third party project, you need a license. It's free for a mod, but not a third party game. So where do I get the license? Thanks in advance!:steamhappy:

Hi there,

You'll want to check out the Source Engine Games on Steam Steamworks documentation for some frequently answered questions in there, including some in regards to licensing.

Thank you, I don't see where to get the licensing though, may you help me with that?

Quotes are from https://partner.steamgames.com/documentation/source_games linkied by Perseus :
Q. Can I sell my Source Engine game on Steam?

A. Yes, but there are a few requirements:

You will need to complete an additional agreement for distributing a paid Source Engine product on Steam.
If you are using the RAD tools included with the Source SDK, you will need to contact RAD for information and cost associated with licensing MILES and/or BINK.
For any Source Engine game that charges money, Havok needs to be paid a licensing fee of $25,000 for the physics engine. You will need to pay this fee up front before making your game available for sale on Steam.
You can only sell your Source Engine game via Steam unless you get a full Source Engine license.

Q. Where can I learn more about Source Engine development?

A. The best place to start is the Valve developer wiki here.

Signing in to https://partner.steamgames.com apparently will provide you with more documentation.

Your questions will probably be better off asked at the specified forums :

You must be new to commercial software licensing. 25k is rather cheap in comparison to stuff i've actually sold to other companies. Which went up to six digit figures. And they gladly paid it. For a non-perpetual license. So they have to renew it.

If it is for just a free mod, you don't need a paid license.
