Usually there's an incentive to preorder; a small discount, exclusive items, free DLC, etc. But yea, if someone isn't sure if their computer can run a game or not, preordering wouldn't be the smartest thing to do :P I think I actually remember people saying that they preordered a game just so they can preload it.

I refuse to buy them on principle. Publishers have been taking pre-orders for games that are almost a year away from release! That's abuse in my book so screw them.
I get them close to release if I can find a good deal. Otherwise I wait a year after release.

I got Borderlands 2 + Season Pass preorder from Green man gaming for a little less then $60 total. ($37.50 + $22.50 = $59.50).

I do it very very rarely.
The last preorder I bought was Hitman absolution.
And only that was because I thought it was a good deal.
only games im sure i will play from day1 like civ5, skyrim or if i can get a good deal by trading
I'll only pre-order if
1) I have a good feeling that the game will be good. Pre release material such as trailers and demos can help
2)There are good incentives to preordering. For me, this involves physical items such as playing cards or a steelbook case. In game items are usually released as DLC later, so I don't feel compelled to risk $60 just for an XP boost or different costumes.
I don't have the money to pay a large amount of money for a game I can't play yet.
I do. The only game where it did not work out was Flatout 3 - as it wasn't developed by Bugbear anymore, what I found out way too late...

I usually pre-order games if they are a sequel to an awesome game and if I want to play them directly after release. And, how I learned, if they are made by the same developers. Did not fail with this so far.

Last ones I remember are
- Darksiders II. First game was epic. I did only spend 4 hours in it - should do some more. Definitely deserves full price.
- Worms Revolution - every 2D-Worms-game pwns. I got Worms Armageddon <3. Was a good price for both.
- Mafia II. IIRC I got Mafia I for free. Played through Mafia II right after release
- Borderlands 2 - the Ultimate Loot Chest Edition was sold out just a few days/weeks after it got available for pre-order. Got tons of nice stuff with it ;) Did play it only for 57 hours until now. Awesome game deserves awesome support. Unfortunately was released shortly after CS:GO, so did not get the attention it deserved... I even took 2 weeks off just to play this - but played more CS:GO in this time ;)
- Serious Sam 3 : BFE... was about 10% off IIRC. Had good fun in the Splitscreen mode on this.
- Portal 2. It's from Valve - no need to think a second about any game made by Valve. Played through it Non-Stop. Singleplayer finished on the first day after release, Coop on the second :)

However, at the moment I don't preorder or buy full price games - CS:GO, DOTA 2, PlanetSide 2 and maybe some older/indie-games I already own inbetween totally take all my time :)

I've started pre-ordering more lately, but mostly on console (new to the modern PC gaming scene). Currently sitting on GTA5, but I've pre-ordered NHL 12 (was a gift), NHL 13, Uncharted 3 and Skyrim in the last year or three. All on console. Having a good job helps, and sometimes its nice to get the whole money thing out of the way early.

Being new to the PC scene, don't let this accounts age fool you, can you pre-order on Steam? If so... can you cancel it before the game is released and get the money back?

you an pre order games on steam. not sure if you can pre perchase every game though. Also, yes if you do want your money back you would contact steam support and tell them you dont want the game anymore and they should give you or money back
I have only once preordered a game, but I knew ahead of time the quality of the game (Torchlight 2), and it gave me a spare copy of the original torchlight so I could gift that to a friend. I also was already aware of the recommended stats for the computer, and mine far outshone that, so I knew I was pretty safe. Most games don't get that kind of a response out of me, though.
I only preorder if a) it's a developer whose games stand out to me and b) there's some tangible bonus for preordering (like above, not in-game "bonuses" unless it's something noteworthy).
I've preordered every Total War/Valve game. Don't have to worry about crap like your run of the mill AAA developers and publishers. Creative Assembly and Valve always deliver exceptional masterpieces.
I only do it on certain games. I've only done it three times this year and ended up kinda disappointed in two of them.

Mass Effect 3, Assassin's Creed III and Worms Revolution (included Worms Armageddon). I wonder if you can guess which two I was disappointed with.
I pre-order if it's a game that I have been anticipating highly and that is from a reputable developer/publisher. I have pre-ordered every Bethesda game and every Firaxis game, for example, and previously Blizzard's stuff too (until D3 made me feel like I got burnt, especially since it was the CE). Other than that ... good deals can do the trick, too. The Hitman pre-order was very tempting, for instance, but it just wasn't really my genre.

With sales becoming more frequent and prices decaying at an increased speed, though, I'm generally moving more and more away from paying the full price.
