With the "demise" of Unity, EGS may pose a larger threat to Steam...?
Unity just dropped a nuke on themselves, with the potential of massive influx of indie games being made with unreal engine, my biggest concern would be :

What if epic starts to make them all EGS exclusive (dare I suggest, permanent exclusivity?)? That on top of sweetener deals like the usual... (Paying the dev)

Would indie dev bite the bait?

Would the steam dominated user base also take the bait this time? I personally don't know, I still do not have epic account yet, if practically every indie games is going to be EGS exclusive then that's such a huge incentive for me even if I hate the idea...

How would valve respond to such situation?

I think this is a very plausible future we may see...

The vast popularity of Steam vs EGS struggling to not make a loss (seriously, they haven't made a single cent of profit yet) will make devs certainly think about if they really want a permanent exclusivity with EGS.
Why would Epic do something so stupid? “Hey, let’s just damage our own interests since Unity went first” in some bid to even the field?

They already allow developers that had been banned on Steam for pumping out spam games.

At this point, who cares if indie devs take the payday.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but the market can easily survive with Steam and Epic both existing and doing well...

Healthy competition is always good.

As far as i read a few weeks ago....epic offers developers a partly/full reduction on the licensing fees for the UE if they make their game (time) exclusiv to the epic store, instead of paying them for exclusivity.
It would be unlikely, developers would not take kindly to EPIC limiting where they can publish their games and the end result would probably be even more damaging then Unity's decision.

But Unreal engine existence itself would be Epic s trump card... since practically there's no other easy and ready to use game engine that indie dev can use to make their games with.

Epic could theoretically strong arm indie dev to make their games only available on EGS if they want to use UE.

It's almost an offer they can't refuse st that point.

But at that point it maybe their only option to actually make a living, I'm pretty sure most would rather earn something than nothing.

That's the concern here.

You'd find many would just use Unity or other lesser known engines in that case. What your describing is a far worse scenario then what Unity is doing.

By that rationale Unity isn’t all that dead, is it?

I really wish people would understand this Unity thing before making up ridiculous theories and suppositions.

Twenty cents per initial install isnt going to break anyone.

To some degree, the most bizarre consequences with the policy change is that the more successful a game could be, the more it may ended up making some developers bleeding out money.

Compared to that, being confined to EGS on PC platform only, would still feels like surefire paradise.

I mean, there are speculations that unity may close shop altogether in the near future judging from their actions anyway...

Paying 20 cents per install is better then losing access to 90% of your market. Aferall they can't install a game if it didn't sell in the first place. Also again, what your describing would make EPIC more hated then Unity and just make the dev's go back to Unity vs Unreal.
