'Add to cart', is it possible to accidently buy the same game twice? what happens?
To my distaste I notice the steam store game pages have changed from "purchase for myself"+"purchase as a gift" to "add to cart".

Previous was handy as if you own the game the myself button was greyed out (or not there entirely). Now I see this 'add to cart' with the warning 'if purchasing for yourself, you will not receive an extra copy of XXX'.

This sounds pretty alarming (and lucky I was paying attention). I am not game enough to test it, so I am wondering what actually happens if you forget to change it to a gift and buy it a second time?

Steam doing dodgy stuff like this is disappointing, it did not need to be changed & worked fine. This is not an improvement in my eyes, a good improvement would be let me wish list games I already own to be alerted of discounts for gifts.

You can only buy it to yourself once. You get the warning that you already own the game... but you can buy the game as the gift. You are not possible to buy another copy of game you already own.

It's not dodgy, it had been requested for years to let peopel buy multiple games at once as a gift instead of having to buy them 1 by 1. This change lets you add 5, 10, or any amount of games to cart and buy them as a gift all at once which is a great change.

Steam will block you and you will not be able to purchase a game you already own, and you will get a message on the checkout screen saying you already own it. Feel free to add a game you own and see what happens.

Thanks for the confirmation, previously I still had a cart and was able to add multiple games no worries.

I was misguided as I was purchasing ATS as a gift as I already own it, but it still allowed me to purchase for myself. I guess that specific game they added further DLC to base game that I don't have, I tried a different game and as confirmed by you good lot, it was indeed greyed out.

With the ATS, it told me what I wouldn't be getting, but not what I would be haha.

Yeah if it contains DLC like a gold edition of a game vs standard and you don't have the extra content it will let you buy it but it should also display a warning that you own the base game and won't recieve an extra copy
