No, I'm not hoarding Steam Decks like a dragon. My wife has one. My son is getting my old one. We're all very happy and satisfied with them as a handheld gaming device.
We are happy with them, but that doesn't mean you will be happy with it, and it all boils down to expectations.
The Steam Deck is running Linux, and while Proton allows it to play most PC games, you cannot play all PC games. There are some that just don't play well, like Destiny 2 and Fortnite. If you get a Deck expecting to play those games, you're going to be disappointed.
The Steam Deck is a portable, battery powered handheld gaming PC with a 15 watt APU. It cannot compare in performance to a powerful desktop, nor can it even compare to a gaming laptop. If you get one expecting to play Starfield at 4k resolution on maximum settings, you're living in a fantasy world, but you're also going to be disappointed.
My recommendation is to do some research. Look up video footage of the system playing the games you want to play and see how well they run. Check out reviews. Perform a reality check to make sure the device actually meets your needs. If it does, get one and enjoy. The OLED version comes out next week with many improvements. The non OLED version gets a price drop, and they are really discounting the refurbished ones by a lot.
But it will also depend on how big your Steam Library is,
and what games you plan to play on it. If you have a big Steam library then more games are going to be compatible and playable on the go for you.
So... what games do you intend to play on it? What are your plans with a Steam Deck?
