why are some words censored?
like ♥♥♥♥, ♥♥♥♥, ♥♥♥♥, etc.

people can either guess what word is being censored from context, and some users work around the censor. words like that are also great at emphasing something.

imo censorship is lame.

is it suppose to protect people from cyberbullying? why not just ignore it? people who throw insults online might as well be shouting at a wall.

Censor don't work, if i say

What the ♥♥♥♥

Don't act like a ♥♥♥♥

Everyone understand it even with the censor !

valve spreads love, not hate. hence the ♥♥♥♥s.

Had the filter not been there people would have been insulting far more because some people have the opinion that just because it isn't censored it means it's allowed to use.

So we have the word filter to try and raise the quality of these discussions and to quickly spot people who likes to insult people.

Lots of sites and cheat names are also in the filters. So this won't be an option.

To me it's not. Many times I've seen posts with swear word after swear word because people can't get their point across without using foul language, it isn't necessary if that person has a point and can convey that message right. Some people find that so hard to do so use language to make up for it.

If the censoring doesn't doesn't work for you then why do you care? That means there is no downside right?

It's really useful for skimming text written by very angry foulmouthed users, you can skip the hearts since it doesn't inform more than that they are upset.

Nope, civilized people do no need vulgarity to get their point through, I personally enjoy that Valve has decided that abusiv/vulgar language is against the rules and will get filtered if a user forget the rules.

There is a ton of forums and sites on the internet you can visit, if you need that kind of language.

If you cant conduct a conversation without the need to swear then you had nothing worthwhile to say in the first place. If i see a post with many hearts i skip it and dont even engage with the writer, no matter the topic.
So i like the censor very much.

same here

I just dont get when people are angry at Valve that they expect a minimum level of intelligent and courtesy from users

Because god forbid people can actually have a conversation without dropping the f bomb every second sentence

Any and all forms of censoring are plain stupid, fruitless in the attempt of discouraging people from insulting one another and a direct violation to the freedom of speech, a freedom no fair society lives without, but I do understand it exists here to avoid certain behavior types.

This community kind of needs it...some users tend to go beyond the line, very often.

That makes no sense to me, real life has rules, you follow them or you face the consequences.

Why should a forum be any different? If people are allowed to do however they please we'd have links posted everywhere to all shady sites with no control whatsoever.

Freedom of speech is still possible, it's not hard to make a post without foul language every other word.

Profanity is a good thing to use to vent frustration, but a bad substitute for punctuation.

im pretty sure that "valve" decided that it would be better for the community to have a censor.
