Best way to do it would be to download and patch when you go to bed.
Then just log in the next day.
I use my original steam install but just start from the games launcher but in the past copy pasting from one drive to another hasnt broken the game to the point of needing a full install.
Ok. You have two ways to do it.
Add the game as a non-Steam game (i.e. screenshots/etc all work). There are no achievements and you can't buy stuff via the Steam wallet for STO. That's pretty much all the bad stuff.
Or..
1. Rename your current STO folder (just change Live to ... Lived). You can then uninstall the game if you want, as long as that 'Lived' folder stays... that's fine. Or rename the STO folder/etc. Depending on when/what Cryptic game you have, it could be under Cryptic Studios or 'star trek online' or whatever. You're using a PC, you should be able to work it out.
2. Start the usual Steam download... but stop it when you see there is a 'gameclient.exe' file (it's small, < 40mb) or something like it. i.e. you do NOT have to download even the 5GB package. Just under 100mb or so.
3. Copy over your current version of 'gameclient.exe' with the version from http://files.startrekonline.com/launcher/Star%20Trek%20Online.exe
You have a choice:
a. copy over the 'Lived' folder (renamed to Live) to the usual SteamApps location (\steamapps\common\star trek online)
b. or make a symbolic link (I'd recommend a hard junction), i.e. delete the current folder in Steam and instead make a link (with the same name) to point to your current STO folder
either way works.
4. Start the game via Steam. This will launch the game client and start patching. At this point you're actually 'outside' of Steam just like it would be for most of the other online games but the Steam UI/Overlay will be running, properly hooked to STO.
To recap: Just download enough that Steam 'thinks' you have the game client file. Replace it. Copy over whatever files you have in Live or make a link to point to it. Done.
Total download with 'patch on demand' disabled is around 17GB. Do you really want to redownload all that?
