Why do Borg spheres take down shields so fast?

Because that's the only thing the borg can actually do anymore. However if you get your drainX high enough, it stops being effective, I have a couple characters ingame that are very nearly immune to it.

The fighting style of the borg is to drop shields and beam drones aboard to assimilate the crew. Then they removed the crew element so now the shield bleedthrough i assume damages your hull as crew numbers are no longer shown and borg cubes on their own can be destroyed by any captain capable of shooting down heavy torpedoes before they hit. Although combined with a supporting sphere the dual shield drain is annoying

That was the original reason i purchased my T5 dreadnought, because there was a mission requiring you to take down two cubes on your own and i just couldn't do enough damage in my T'varo light bird before the shield bleedthrough killed my crew when it wasn't drained completely.

Game mechanics aside: it is to simulate the Borg "adapting" to you and therefore bypassing shields. They way this is implemented (op shield drain) is up to debate.

Wrong. It doesnt matter how much high your drain skill is (btw the drain skill from your skill tree doesnt improve resistance to drain...... ) , the borg tachyon beam is designed to work all the time no matter what you do.

sorry but you're very wrong there, DrainX boosts your draining abilities, and resistance to the same, should actually try playing occasionally, you might know these things :)

no amount of drain x makes you immune to the borg stripping shields. hazard emitters will clear it, though.

Yup you right about that part. I said it wrong. What i meant is, that against any other enemy npc, that will work. But against borg tachyon beams, it doesnt. As simply as that. Its has been that way since the buff to the borg tachyon beam appeared.

But if you dont know this... i mean.. lol.

sorry, but I face those beams at least 3-4 times a day, they don't bother me anymore. I will add that I have a rediclous DrainX score, to the point that I can render a tac cube on advanced completely defenceless with tykens rift, and one other power drain skill (any will do)

I have a science drain boat (T5U Nebula) with 200+ drain skill. Tachyon beams from either Cubes or Spheres do still affect me, but they aren't likely to deplete my shields if its one instance of it.

well, my drainX is well over 300, got the Breen carrier, and hopefully soon to have the dread from the Phoenix box :) (PC was dead last holiday and I missed it)

N3mes1s, did you read the description for Drain Expertise. It says right there that it improves your drain abilities and resistance to the same.

Wrong. It doesnt matter how much high your drain skill is (btw the drain skill from your skill tree doesnt improve resistance to drain...... ) , the borg tachyon beam is designed to work all the time no matter what you do.

They will cut through your ships hull with their cutting beam and tractor lock you. Then they beam drones aboard to scan your vessel and they the drones themselves take down your deffenses before assimilating you into the Hive Mind.
