Level too low for mission, now what?
I started playing 3 day's ago and I'm a lvl 8 Lt. I just got the mission The Kuvah'Magh and it's showing the title in yellow text. That tells me that I'm too low for the mission. I even tried and got shot out of space in about 1 minute.

So how does a lvl 8 toon get more expierence so the mission becomes something that I can manage? I looked under the "u" key command and there is no tab listing for "available", so where do I go from here?

To gain more experience, try running missions you've done over again .. at your level (8 as you say) you should be getting just over 800 xp for a replay.
That being said .. you really must be doing something wrong to get killed off so easy, in a mission you are over leveled for (KM is a level 6 mission).

(Edit) .. I'm sure nemi will jump in and either agree or dissagree with me on this sometime soon.

Thanks for the help. I had three ships gang up on me at the beginning of the mission and my shields were down in no time. I've updated them with what I have looted but I guess I need to work on something different.

Were you teamed with someone much higher level than you and not level matching? That's the only way you should have been easily destroyed. STO missions more or less scale to your level or the team's level. It's also possible someone could have sneaked on to your team without you noticing, because Open teaming is set by default. Very rare for that to happen though.

If that wasn't the issue, follow this basic scrub checklist (note: this is not how to play the game well, but it's good enough for any normal level story content and you should never be worse than this):
1. Slide your weapon power to maximum and lock it, then divert the remaining power to shields.
2. Right-click everything in your weapon box so that they have a green border around them. This will set them to auto-fire and keep your fire rate up without hammering spacebar.
3. Find the bridge officer trainer and buy a manual for Torpedo Spread I, then train your tactical officer with it and slot it on your Stations tab and hotkey bar. This is by far the best attack for Tier I starships and later on your shuttle when you get it. Use it as frequently as possible and don't worry about whether your targets have full shields up, fire all your torpedoes anyway. The more you fire weapons, the more you win in this game.

For added safety, use your science and engineering slots on Science Team, Engineering Team, Transfer Shield Strength and/or Hazard Emitters. There's some other stuff you could do, but this is basic scrub strategy. Once you get some extra tactical slots, use them on Beam Fire at Will and Tactical Team I to quickly relocate shields.

Congrats, you're now a basic scrub. No story content should give you trouble again until you encounter the little tricks used by Romulan battleships and the Borg, whereupon you may need to study up on how to counter tractor beams and shield drains.

Thanks. I've been playing since Friday and have been looking in the Forums for information. That helped alot. Still trying to figure this game out.

yeah this is good info. Also. THE D'deridex. That's supposed to be STO's first major difficulty spike. If you know what you're doing, it's not that bad, however.
First thing, you want to stay at least 5km away, this will prevent it from using tractor beams.
Next, use Fire At Will or Scatter Volley (the former is more-recommended) when it fires those triple torpedoes. Alternately, if you've got the Point Defense console (T3 Akira Retrofit, or the Exchange for KDF).
Finally, Hazard Emitters will clear any Plasma burns. Science Team will clear Viral Matrix, or you can use an Emergency Power ability, Batteries, or Engineering Team to clear the individual disables.

D'Deridex warbirds are a pain to deal with but you can winf: first off ENG team will deal with if ya get hit with viral matrix, also stay about 5km+ away from the warbird to not allow it use of its tractor beam this also gives you reaction time to target and destroy the plasma torps or use beam fire at will/ cannon scatter volly/ torp spread to intercept them. these tactics can easily neautralize the high damage output a DD has. one last bit of advise keep on the warbirds tail it can't use viral matirx if you keep to it's aft section

For counter to tractor beams, have Polarize Hull science skill. For rebalancing shields without using a Boff skill, there is the arrow keys and a key to balance all of them. Also have engineer skill Emergency Power to Shields.
