Its all down to the people really
Punishes are basically non-existent.
Hell im pretty sure lol is considered casual dota by MANY people.
Its a completly subjective statment most of the time
Ok I’ll do my best here....
Fighting games are a mix of skills, in no particular order of importance:
Execution,
Muscle memory,
Timing,
Reactions,
Predicting attacks,
Training your opponent (getting them to do something repeatedly, so you can exploit it),
Learning character move/combo sets and becoming comfortable in being able to pull them off at will, this also allows you to know what your opponents character is capable of,
Playing the game for 100s hours, practice, practice and more practice,
Then we get deeper, how intelligent are you?, are you a quick thinker, what strategies can you employ in a fight?,
How many times can you fight the same person?, their tactics might beat you the first couple times, but then perhaps they become too predictable and have very readable patterns of attack that you can punish,
PUNISHMENT, that is in essence what a fighting game is all about, your opponent makes a mistake, and your have the chance to punish them for it, that’s where combo practice pays off,
Nothing is more beneficial that practicing move execution, but you need just as much time facing opponents that are more skilled than you, you seldom improve fighting people below you, either slightly better than you, or a lot better is the best 2 choices on who to play,
That being sad, fighting games are a niche, because they require more effort and practice than most games do.
The cold hard truth is, there is no magic sauce, or shortcut to improving your game, only practice and LOTS of loosing is going to make you better, if any of that is off putting, perhaps beat-em-ups ain’t for you.
"Practice tool is almost useless" - It actually isn't, it's basically one of the most powerful tools in a fighting game, you can learn combos, learn reaction time by setting the AI to do something like a move, you can learn how to punish or to get better at punishing moves, alongside other things, a quick look online should provide you with more info about this.
"All tutorials are shown with a controller" - By this you are refering to the in-game tutorials right? But you didn't specificate what type o controller you're using, if you are using a keyboard, there are keyboard button prompts in the game, so I'm not sure what the problem is in this one, sorry.
"Some of the combos they shown in the menu, I pull them off exactly as listed, but it's not actually a combo" - If it is shown in the menu, it should work, unless there was some mistake and the game is showing the wrong combo/moves that character can do. That said, there are some input options on the game's settings, be sure to check it out, as by default the game have some settings thar makes it easier to miss on the more precise inputs you need to do (I found this while on the tutorial as the game alerted me after I was not being able to pull something with Baraka)
"There is no kasual, there is no ranked, there is just the same thing with different names" - There is difference between the modes, Kasual, just like the name implies, is just a casual match between two people with no skill level being accounted for, also in this mode you can use any character variation you want. Now for ranked, as the name implies, you will climb a ladder that reflects your skill level with the game, I don't actually know much about how to ranked system works in this game as I have not tested it, but it should not be complicated. Also, in ranked you can't play with custom variations, you need to play with the default ones the game characters come with.
"It's really hard to git gud when you keep getting beat over and over and over" - While I agree that being beat over and over again is frustrating, that is the nature of fighting games, try to learn something every time you go online fighting someone, eventually you will get better and better and will start winning against the people that you consider good/better than you at the game.
And with kasual and kompetitive, yeah, i guses that's the only difference. You cant use custom varieties. The ladder MIGHT show your skill but it's absolutely worthless, it doesn't mean anything. This isn't csgo, dota, LoL where your rank actually represents you.
This site helps. https://fgmoves.com/games/mk11/moves uses 1234 so its universal to understand
