Crashing? Temporary fix (Updated Sept 26, 2024)
For anyone still experiencing crashes after the hotfix: We're having trouble reproducing the issue but we think it has something to do with a configuration to do with Steam and Microsoft. Since Tarn is away for a week to attend his grandmother's funeral, our best advice right now is to install and run the latest C++ runtime from Microsoft until we figure out how to fix the config: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170

Thanks for your patience and understanding and if you have any info about what you're experiencing when crashing, please share in the comments or over on the Kitfox Discord [discord.gg] in the #bug-discussion channel

Update as of September 26th:

This issue is also effecting patch 50.14 (main branch with Fortress Mode). In the meantime, we've set up a branch for 50.13, no password needed.

Installing the latest C++ runtime as linked above is still the main fix right now until we hear back from Steam. Remember to install the x64 version.

It always happens when offloading or loading the site

Running and repairing the above Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables for both 32bit / 64bit, then rebooting solved the issue for me. Also can see in Windows Event Log errors indicating it was "Faulting module name: MSVCP140.dll" beforehand.
Hey there's a crash in the conversation menu. If you are a long standing adventurer and try to bring up your past actions in the world to someone else, it will crash trying to load in the new menu. It may be because of how many previous events it has to load a possible conversation choice with. Any other conversation topic is unaffected it appears.

My game doesn't even start anymore, whether in the "None" or "Beta". It started in a previous beta patch. Edit: Performing a "Repair" with the redistributable.

Dunno if this helps but When my DF crashed there was a pop-up of steam about cloud error
My game has a 50/50 chance of crashing when I create a character or load a save
I am now unable to save my fort without crashing. I tried the C++ Runtime fix, but that didn't work. Guess I'll wait for an update to hopefully solve that ...

Did you make sure to install the x64 version and perform a "Repair"?

I did both. I was able to make a new world and fort, and save that - but my current (heavily populated, larger) fort crashes at "unloading units."

From the sounds of it this seems to be the same issue that the Dolphin emulator developers encountered from updating their Visual Studio release:

https://dolphin-emu.org/blog/2024/09/04/dolphin-progress-report-release-2407-2409/#visual-studio-twenty-twenty-woes

There doesn't seem to be any good fix for this because of Microsoft's insistence to not have backwards compatibility here.
Other then telling people to go install the new version of the redist, the only things that can be done is either on Valve's end (forcing people to install the new version of the redist on startup) or Microsoft's end (somehow convincing them that this one extremely random one-off case of not having backwards support is causing issues when they already said they don't care).

Thanks for this insight! Steam also told us it was an issue on our end and we are pushing back on this because we don't believe it is. The conversation continues.
If you are one Linux, setting the launch command to
fixed it for me. The path at the beginning should be the path to the dwarfort executable on your system.

EDIT: Nevermind. It doesn't crash on startup on this version for me anymore, even without the change to the launch options. I only had problems with the last version.

Crashes I encountered frequently (more than 5 times):
-Entering a tower/dark fortress (I heard this is a long standing issue that is due to loading entities)

-Crashing on adventurers bringing up rumors (When you get into more than a few months of adventure it seems that there is no way for it to load all the possible topics and crashes upon doing so. I feel like adding a sub folder of options by month would help condense the overload. That or allow us to remove specific discussion topics permanently)

- Crashing on multiple uses of map travel and then coming out of map travel. (not sure what could be the cause of this but frequent saving helps)

- Crashing when in map travel mode when going around certain areas (not sure on this either as this has happened sporadically world-to-world, but repetitive in each world for specific areas. Maybe an entity issue as I was headed towards a necro tower in the last crash. Or maybe there are encounters that are bugged)

- Crashes on entering lairs (separated this because I am not sure how it could be an entity issue like the towers as its usually 1 beast. Weirdly never crashed on a labyrinth)
