Help! I need meat :))
How can I butcher non-tame animals that I've captured please?

You can't give butcher orders for animals who don't belong to your fortress. So you either need to tame them first, or release them and kill them with a hunter or military.

caged creatures are in the "other' tab, assign a trainer to each one. Once they're trained you can butcher them

But that doesn't make sense at all. Hopefully the developers will change it soon :)

But thank you for your answers. :)

There are lots of things in this game which don't make sense. But this one actually does. You wouldn't bring a live wild animal who is willing to fight for his life to a regular butcher shop in real life either, I guess.

Got to agree with you there.

For non-tame animals, you can always drop them into a pit that will kill them, then butcher the corpses, or release them into an arena where they are killed by soldiers, then butchered.

I think.

There is also an Animal Caretaker (A Vet) that won't heal animals, because it wasn't implemented yet.

Dropping things/animals/enemies into a pit is always a good approach. If you want to get remains for the butcher, don't dig the pit too deep. After too many z levels drop (~7 I think), they just go splat and leave a pool of blood and nothing else usable.

I'm probably really stupid. I tamed a squirrel, a hamster and a lizard. How on earth do I get them out of the cage?

Those are "small animals", aka "vermin". You can get them out of the cage by building the cage somewhere, then linking a lever to the cage. But it would be a bit pointless if you want meat, because you won't get anything useful from vermin.

The only point(s) of catching vermin animals is so that they don't raid your stockpiles. Well you can tame them and maybe some dwarf wants them as a pet. But they are no source for meat, leather, bones, or anything else useful.

You can just click on the cage and uncheck the animal's checkmark and it will release immediately (after you have placed the cage as you would with other furniture)

oh derp, I thought that was only possible with your own animals and citizens, not with wild animals and hostile creatures...

One more thing please. I know I'm annoying but I'm a total newbie to this game. I have a lot of crystal set crowns made. A merchant comes to me and I have no choice to bring valuables to the store. Just furniture, food, drink, barrels and similar cheap stuff. Come to me exclusively dwarves for trade. They don't want valuables?
