Also you can make rooms that aren't squares. But I might've mis-understood.
My "tutorial" started off isolated on an island surrounded by elves, in a swamp, with nothing but loam and sand for six z-levels... Not going back there, again. :)
As far as "rooms" go, you have to designate spaces for specific uses. I'm not quite sure what you're getting at with your description. Some "Rooms" do have specific requirements, like Doors, before they can be designated.
Edit-Note: The Erase button and the rest of the UI gets unlocked further on in the Tutorial.
Sick burn bro. But seriously, we should be welcoming new players not telling them the equivalent of "Git Gud".
That being said, OP does need to realize that this tutorial is the very first ever attempt at hand-holding new players. Having a tutorial at all isn't very dwarfy in the first place, best to learn from that error, and make a new game where the real challenge will begin.
Good luck Urist!
If you don't want to wait out the digging on this run, it might be worth abandoning the fort and starting a new one on the same world or a new world.
Though I will say, I think teaching how to make farmable/pasture land underground and setting up some kind of food/alcohol production would be a good addition to the tutorial, or at least an extension of it. Perhaps it could introduce things like the caves and military as well...
Your interpretation of the tutorial was flawed, and you made assumptions of the text that never explicitly stated what you assumed. That, in of itself, is not the fault of the tutorial.
Although, I will agree in that it needs more polish. The foundation is good, but it could be better.
Also join the official Discord and ask questions. Lot of people in there answering constantly, but at least reference the wiki first. So many questions are answered there.
IE, find limonite? Wiki it. What is flux? Wiki "flux". Want iron? Wiki iron.
The controls are different in the Steam version but probably 99% of the info there applies.
But you will need some patience because the initial barrier is quite thick.
Dummy thicc.
IMHO, in-game tutorials are mostly useless and contain the most superficial knowledge that the player can figure out on his own. It would be a great idea to integrate df wiki into the game (like Paradox games do).
