Source port?
I have had problems with running this game. The default mode of 640x400 (presumably chosen because it's a doubling of the old VGA Mode 13h which the Doom-engine games ran on) is incompatible with Windows 8, as I learned the hard way some hours ago, and I had a hard time getting the settings back to my laptop's native 1366x768. Through another thread here, I've found the temporary kludge of adding
-width 1024 -bpp 32
to the Hexen II start parameters; but although this makes the game work properly with Windows 8, it causes another problem in that the text isn't scaled to the new res, and is thus hard to read especially with my aging eyesight (and the low contrast of the red text with the dark-but-not-quite-black background doesn't help either).

As the title of this thread implies, I think the permanent solution would be to use a source port, as I do with the Doom-engine games including the original Hexen. I suspect that this would also be the only way I could run Heretic II (which I have on order from Amazon UK) and Portal of Praevus (still looking for that one). I know that there is at least one source port available, and at least for the first Quake, because I had it for three months in 2011; but I lost it (and the download address) when some scumbag stole my laptop. (Using a source port would also have the side bonus that I would no longer have to put up with Steam's idiotic misspelling of the name; it's "Hexen" (meaning "witches") for goodness' sake, not "He Xen" (meaning nothing).)

Any recommendations (preferably with links)? This could also help me in the future if/when I finally dump Windows and switch to Linux instead. (I only stick with Windows because of the large amount of legacy software I have which needs it; and snce Micro$oft have shot themselves in the foot (IMO) by makng 8 incompatible in many ways even with XP, since this means I can no longer run many of my progs, I may as well have a decent OS to not run them on.)

Hammer of Thyrion is definately the best thing to ever happen to Hexen II.

So there are currently 2 source ports for Hexen 2: uhexen2 Hammer of Thyrion, and UQE?

Any source ports manage to combine Quake 1 and Hexen 2 into the same engine like Zdoom did with Doom1&2 Heretic1 & Hexen1?

Just saw this. I might be 2 years late, but hey.

No source port will ever be able to achieve that. The reason why Zdoom could do that with Doom engine games is that there weren't any code differences between all of them. Sure, some are more complex, but the changes were limited to scripting (namely, the ACS system, or Action Code Script).

The Quake 1 engine version used in Hexen 2, however, differs greatly from the original, since it not only had to support 3dFX graphics cards, but because most of the changes necessary to run it involved altering the code: surprisingly, the Quake 1 engine isn't as flexible for modding as the Doom engine was. Still, the source code is out there, and Hammer of Thyrion is quite wonderful.

its better to copy the installed game downloaded from steam and paste it somewhere to install the source port? or is safe to unzip the sourcport in the same folder where steam install HeXeN II? because since source port modify the exe of the game i fear might make me have troubles with VAC

game doesnt use vac. fell free to modify game.no need copy and paste
rename source port exe file to exe file that steam uses for this game to make steam overlay working and counts hours for game
