Issues increasing resolution (original doom 3)

if I adjust the resolution, it tells me it will kick in the next time I start up the game.

But it doesn't. I still have large black bars on the sides of my screen, even though the resolution is increased. If I make the resolution really large, then the resolution immediately resets to the lowest one.

The only way I can make it work at the proper resolution is to se the proper resolution, then hibernate my laptop with the game still running and then reopen it. THEN it will display the right resolution.

Is there a way to fix this issue?

find you doomconfig.cfg file and adjust these:

seta r_customHeight "1080"
seta r_customWidth "1920"
seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_mode "-1"

assuming you wanna play 1080p

Doesn't work...I still get the 4:3 view with the black bars on the side.

I set the seta r_mode "-1" thing, but the game itself keeps modifying that value to make it 5, or 3 instead of -1...

Change AA and Anisotropy to 4 or 2 and then try again.

I changed Anisotropy, but.. I can't find anything titled AA, or with the initials AA....

Yeah I guess I forgot to add two lines for AA (anti-aliasing) and anisotropy. I have AA set to 8x and Anisotropy set to 8x so mine look like:

seta r_multiSamples "8" (this is the AA command)
seta image_anisotropy "8"

Somebody mentioned setting r_aspectratio to "1" but I was never aware of this since everything else worked fine.

If that doesn't work then maybe look for a HD mod since lots offer more screen resolutions.

Once you have altered the config file you need to make it read only.

First go to your game and choose the setting u want for your graphical experience... for example "ultra" and all the advanced ones u want, don't worry about the resolution for now.

Create a txt file in the doom 3 folder base folder ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Doom 3\base"), name it res.txt.
Then include these lines (choose the value that suits your needs):

r_mode "-1"
r_aspectratio "?" (0 for 4:3, 1 for 16:9 & 2 for 16:10)
r_customwidth "?" (screen width eg. 1980)
r_customheight "?" (screen height eg. 1050)
vid_restart
________________
*Remember to put the values between " (example "2")

Save the txt and then change the file extension to ".cfg"... so u will get res.cfg instead of res.txt.

Then go into your game and at the menu screen open console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+° or Ctrl+Alt+Tab (depends, for some keyboard settings its the key next to no.1 key).

Once in console write this command: exec res.cfg
press enter.

Voila!

P.D.You can use this same (res.cfg) file for Doom3 original and resurrection, altho u will have to open console individually in both games to execute it.

So despite trying all these fixes, I continue to still have this issue. My menu and other UI (including HUD) is extremely low resolution (screenshot) making the game unplayable, and the gameplay resolution also doesn't seem to be the resolution I set in both doomcfg and autoconfig. The only thing this seems to change is the resolution of the Steam UI overlay.

Running Win7 (64-bit).

Same problem as above except that aspect ratio remain the same. Any advice, please?
