Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Could not load OpenGL subsystem
Yeah.... critical error after I tried to adjust my resolution. Apparently I have to "reinstall" the entire freaking game.

Steam, you need to demand a patch for this.

dalbozofgurth, you need to user the Search tool before posting a topic answered hundred times since the release of the game :)

Just remove the wolfconfig.cfg in return to castle wolfenstein/main, or edit the cvar r_mode (default is 4).
M@tEo$ you need to ask someone first if the search system was failing on their end before chiding someone. Every time I try a search on steam it gets all mucked up.

Thanks, although I think I'm just going to install my hard copy because it didn't have the same issues with the graphics. In fact, I can actually use Wide Screen with my CD Copy.
There's as well Google as a fallback solution :)

It's just about a single file, which isn't removed while uninstalling.
I don't care if it's 1 or 1,000. It's a failure by the company. My CD version doesn't do this on my other laptop, so something is definitely fouled up with the Steam Files.

Someone at Steam should demand the company fix the issue.

The Steam files are the same; As you pointed, you've a different system. If you closely look at drivers changelogs, there's changes going on for OpenGL, and some games doesn't work with the current beta drivers from both NVidia or AMD. So it could be the OS, the drivers, ofc the game, but not always.

You can download the unofficial 1.42b patch, it's fixed in it I think, and you'll have more resolutions to choose with it :)

1. The steam files are not the same, the location of the same game files pretty much proves that.
2. My two computers have identical specs, down to both being toshibas with the same operating system and drivers.

I've never had the problem with my CD files that I've had with the files I downloaded from steam.
I do not know where people are getting the insane idea that they are the same exact file and setup, especially since my CD version boots up differently than the steam version.

One possible explanation is that they may have released RtCW twice? I know I got mine in the collector's tin, first release, and I know there are some differences with the first release and subsequent ones, maybe that's why I don't have issues with my CD version (despite its bugs, it wasn't "fixed").

Maybe it's time for the company to make patch 1.42b official and just make that part of the download for steam.

I don't care. The entire point of the Steam Service is that you don't have to go searching for bug patches from elsewhere on the net because they have a different series of files.

I'll just by using my original CD files for now, I don't need to be doing these extra steps
.
I had as well a CD version, and like WolfET sometimes changing the res crashes the games... It never happened to me, but I know for some people it does.

The one Steam have is 1.4 with a no CD, while the latest official is 1.41b; Also, Steam release includes all the MP mappacks. I upgraded it to 1.41b and it is fine, while some others need 1.42b.
Unfortunately, the mappacks nolonger matter since I can never find a single MP game. Which really sucks, cause I actually liked wolfenstein MP.
I'm up for a game of RTCW classic, form a group and invite me to it.

Regarding the OpenGL issues you can normally just copy the OpenGL DLL file(s) to the game folder and it will launch... the current versions of OpenGL are not as backwards compatible as they once were, epsecially if running Windows Vista or a later Microsoft Operating System.

Either of these should work:
C:\Windows\System32\opengl32.dll
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\opengl32.dll

Copy it into the game folder, usually at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\...[the rest]...

I also wrote a guide for MP on Steam, you may check it if you've troubles :)

I solved the problem using the recomendation in this Thread:
http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13343998

Code:
set r_customwidth "<the native horizontal resolution for your monitor>"
set r_customheight "<the native vertical resolution for your monitor>"
set r_mode "-1" // note: that's a negative 1
set r_fullscreen "1"

And in this Guide show who to play in Singleplayer

I think there's a r_customaspect cvar to set to 1 too, if a 16/9 or 16/10 screen is used?
Sorry for bumping an old thread, however, I've just found a method.

Change the shortcut code to: -set r_fullscreen "0".

This will launch the game in a window (at whatever resolution) and not crash on startup, enabling you to change the resolution to a safe resolution. After that, delete the shortcut code and change the 'Fullscreen' option to 'Yes' on the game's settings.
