Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

[SOLVED] Game starts, then bugs out.
So I've just bought RTCW for nostalgic purposes as I remember playing this game religously on the original xbox, but now that I have downloaded and installed the program, I can start the game fine, the start credits play, then i reach the main menu. Everything is fine for about 10 seconds and then all the words and backgrounds turn grey, blurry, and illegable. I have tried the 1.42 patch and many compatability settings to try and get this game to work. My specs are:
Windows 7 64 bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 - 3330 CPU @ 3.00ghz
AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series
8.00 GB RAM

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

You have to use the unofficial patch for widescreen then it works great.
This game is pretty amazing at 1440p , at first i had problems running above 800x600 as i had resident 3dfx drivers in the system. The game defaults to 3dfx and won't let you change it if you leave drivers in system files. Remove these and it works great.
I am not sure about AMD though as i have Nvidia sorry.

No worries man, how would I go about adjusting my 3dfx files?
tazamiga May 3, 2014 @ 11:40pm
i just made a new folder (old 3dfx files) and cut and pasted them into there.
Most of the games that used glide i don't play much anyway. This was the only way i could figure out how to not have Wolfenstein auto detect them.
if you just go to my computer C: drive and on top right where it has search type - 'glide'
this will then search for all glide drivers .
Once it locates them all , just manually cut and paste or rename them whichever you prefer.
I probably wouldn't normally go to this effort for a game but this game is actually worth it.

Still has not fixed the problem. It runs fine when it opens, the resolution is fine and everything, but again, after like 10 seconds the background for the main menu turns grey, the headings turn into orange blocks, and the writing turns into illegible blurry white writing. Thanks for the help though.

wow that i haven't exerienced , You will probably need to see if anyone else has the same card and what they have done to get it working. try searches in google , that is all i did to get mine working. It sounds like an issue with the drivers running openGL .Anyway good luck, I hope you get it working.

People experienced issues with Glide and old OpenGL games :/ There's at least one topic here with someone who had to remove it iirc.

Are your drivers up to date?
Grimmo May 4, 2014 @ 3:19am
Yeah, drivers are fully up to date. I'm completely at a loss, i've scoured the internets and tried all possible fixes but no one seems to have the same issue as me. Very strange.

Do you have CFG files in SteamApps/common/return to castle wolfenstein/Main?

If not, do you have Steam in Program Files? If so, try to launch the game with the EXE as Admin.

If it doesn't work, try to rename the gl folder to something else and try to launch again :/
If it still doesn't work, rename it back

Can you try to make a backup (with Steam tools), if you have it in Program Files, uninstall it, and install it out of PF?

Does the game work if you switch off opengl option?
Grimmo May 4, 2014 @ 4:32am
Deleted the CFG files, admin doesn't work. I renamed the gl folder but nothing happened so I changed it back. How would I go about switching off the opengl option?

+set r_allowExtensions 0 in the Launch Parameters (Right click on the game in your Steam Library, Properties, Launch parameters...).

Okay, woke up today and tried that, still nothing. If anything it made it last a couple more seconds then went all crazy again.

Might give 'verify the intergity of game files' a try. right click the game and it's under properties local files. It's not a huge download so maybe if that doesn't work try completely uninstalling (removing) the game and a fresh install, then straight to the unoffcial patch, before even starting the game.

Deleted game files, re-downloaded the game, proceeded to get the same unofficial patch and patch the game. Still the same issue. Cheers for the suggestion though.

That is really weird it must be a display driver problem. You can also switch off open Gl in the menu if you can that to work. there must be a way to fix it. That would actually drive me mad to have that sort of problem :/
