Friends / Defend Agreement / AI
Hi, I literally started to play the game a week ago and now I have a basic question as I was disappointed by my Persian AI Friend in game. Let´s say that guy didn´t give a ♥♥♥♥ when I was attacked by the whole world, even though he was the world leader at that point, totally dominating the scene.

So the question arises in me: how much is Defend Agreemend or Friendship worth with AI? Does it depend on Cultures or Circumstances? Or is it always so disappointing?

EDIT: yes I had open borders and yes I helped this NPC friend in 3 wars before, when he wanted help.

Well look at it this way and you can always count on this:

1) If you don't crush any civ without any friends, they will always team up against you.

2) Focus on teching up, not to many wonders. If you have a better military they will always see you are the bigger power so they all want to be bubby-buddy with you (that means if you have a big millitary everyone will like the warmonger ai then they will be more inclined to be friends).

3) Cultures don't matter, this isn't a EU4 or CK2 type of game but what does matter is your history as your type of nation. Look up online what the another nations were and if you can get to the better sense of what they are.

So I hope that helps, because its helped me so far. Good hunting. :)

Just because you are friendly with another civ doesn't mean you should automatically accept when they ask you to go to war with another civ. The only penalty you will get with an AI civ for not joining them in a war is if you say "give me ten turns to prepare" and then decline, if you just say you are not interested from the start they will say "that's disappointing" but it will not incure any penalty. 9 times out of 10, if they ask you to declare war on a civ that is close to you they will not even send any of their own troops, and then will later denouce you as a warmonger. Not to mention the rest of the world will get angry with you even sooner for it.

I've found it is usually better to be friends with civs in the middle of the pack rather than the runaway leader, since that leader will eventually turn his sights on your lands as his next target. Of course this also means that if you are in the lead most other civs will start to unite against you...

Ok, got that. Thanks! But when it comes to defense agreement which as far as I remember is independent from friendship. Is it normal that an oversee leader with strong army just doesnt send no help at all? What´s the point of defense agreement then?

defensive agreements are actually kind of tricky. If you sign one with somebody then a coallition attacks you, your partner will only be drawn into war with the first one to attack you (and visa versa, if your partner is attacked you only declare war on the first to DoW on him/her). Also, if you sign a defensive pact and then declare war on a 3rd party it will immediately nullify your defensive pacts with all parties. Hope that clarifies things a bit more.

Not always the case but yes you need to be friends with at least 1/3 of the civs your playing with to look like the super power forever. Just play your cards right and you will win every time.
