Unfortunately, the dev has heard this feedback from the majority of their players, but they don't seem interested in changing anything. It turned me off to this studio a bit, because it made it crystal clear that they released in early access just to get money, versus out of a desire to actually make their game more fun.
The Mistland Update released 2 years ago now, and since then, the sheer Quantity of posts about the mist, "help us deal with the mist", "more ways to deal with the mist", etc is definitely something they saw.
Now whether they'll acknowledge that we REALLY don't like how it works "now", and deal with it or not, is another question.
But what leads me to think that they will do "something", is that there are objects, (that you have to cheat to get access to), that ARE PRESENT in the game already !
It's called "dverger demister_large or something like that, and it pushes the mist away in a perfectly, large enough area, in my opinion.
Unfortunately, you can't build it, you have to cheat.
But it is in the game.
We all know the small "blue bulbs" thingy is just not enough to deal with the mist.
They just have to give us access to the demister to solve the mistlands.
Like... literally. Give me this thing and I'm happy in the mistlands.
Will they do it or not ? I don't know.
But they are revisiting all the previous biomes and will inevitably go over the mistlands at some point.
It's THE most popular subject of complain about the game, 1st ahead of "ashland too hard"
(which is not, imo, git gut noobs)
jk guys cmon 😅
And no bashing on you.
A large portion of the player base think the same.
We just don't have enough tools to deal with the mist.
I think, and I hope they'll do "something" about it...
The second time i played it was meh. Not great, but not too bad either. I already knew what to expect, how to approach different situations, what to look for… so it felt much easier.
The third time (and each time after that) i absolutely loved it. I enjoy the ambient. I love the colors in early morning and evenings.
My friends didn’t like Mistlands that much so I spent a lot of time alone out there, leveling up my magic skills, growing crops and getting mats for my mage tower. I love to build on those high pillars.
The only thing i didn’t like are new skills. I do like magic, but i don’t like how they implemented it so late in the game and forced us to spend a lot of hours to level it up to make it useful. At that point I already have my primary and secondary weapon skill, as well as bows skill, over 50. And if I want to make magic useful, I have to go back and use it in black forest or swamp to get it at least to level 30 to be at par with my other skills. The same goes for crossbow. That one should be available in black forest so i can chose between it and bows earlier. This way bows always wins and i will maybe make a crossbow just to hang it on the wall.
Seekers that instaleap to you and can stay in the air for eternity make any positional tactics and crowd control useless. They also deal absurdly large amount of knockback tossing you dozens feet away
Seeker brutes are annoying damage sponges (even if you're lucky to never meet the 2-starred ones), and even more annoying in solo due to their absurdly fast turning speed.
Gjall is ok, but his ticks can be buggy and unpredictably bounce off terrain.
Dvergr are punchbags that are usually being torn to pieces by seeker spawns and their buildings being obliterated by brutes and gjalls in couple of hours being around their fortresses (they also tend to destroy their own defence and especially the totem with aoe spells).
The landscape is randomly wobbly and unimmersive (I've explored some mistland area before the actual patch and got some "naked" mistland landscape - it is just effortless perlin noise bumps and pits), hidden in the mist. Destroyable rock formations destroy uncontrollably, making strategic or cosmetic terraforming messy thus impractical.
Building is practical only on previously destroyed or abandoned dvergr camps since these are the few flat surfaces in the biome. And you won't be able to see anything but mist and perlin moise bumps around you, so why bother building there.
The boss location is an essence of all mess the biome have - multiple flying enemies, ladders on which you can't hit your target, annoying mist and the sponginess of the actual boss (took me over 30 minutes to solo it with skeletons and fireball magic - this is by a half more than a maximum rested buff lasts)
Worthy predecessor of the trAshlands biome.
I recommend another mod called combat slope fix, that enables you to aim up and down with melee weapons (just the hitbox not the animation), because not having that in the base game is a bizzare decision by the devs, especially in mistlands
I downloaded a mod.
300 hours of Valheim and I just installed my first one. That one to get rid of the mist, and it has made the "Mistlands" actually enjoyable. No more frame-rate issues, no more having to keep zoomed in on my shoulder to see what's in front of my face - just fun progression.
Then I watched a seeker soldier take down part of a Black Marble Tower, so now I have 6 chests full of stuff from that.
I am happy to report i have done similar (not fully remove but made the mistbuddy clear WAY more fog) and i am now enjoying the mistlands much, much more. that's literally all it took was to make the wisp clear.... like 10x farther than it currently does lol. i can still see thick mist far enough out that it does present some navigational issues, but i no longer feel claustrophobic and blind.
Maybe I am better at sniffing out locales, but once you know the shapes of things you can identify dungeons a lot of the time by seeing just part of the rock or even walking upon it.
You can also find dungeons by listening for Seekers and following that or where they attack from. If you only navigate the Mistlands by day, enemy encounters are kind of rare, and at least half the time are guards from a dungeon.
Barley Wine is a staple of my kit for fighting Gjalls, and a portal is a dedicated part of my inventory for taking breaks and ferrying back dungeon loot.
Really my only gripe now is the Dvergr's remain a massive threat to me, I always die to them every playthrough.
With that said, I understand the Mist is oppressive. I don't believe in removing it since that seems (to my taste) a bit cheaty. I do use Better Wisps however, it takes a fortune in silver but the final tier for the wisplight cuts a big area around you and seems balanced to me. The mist is still there but now I can enjoy the biome's beauty.
Get the better wisps mod. You can upgrade the wisp to tier 4 and it makes a huge difference without taking away the challenge of the zone. It is worth it to push forward into and past the mistlands. It's an awesome environment, but it is a cluster without that mod.
"...it's tedious and there's very little payoff because hardly nothing ever seems worth the hassle."
--Its a little slow going at first but once you are geared up it gets much easier. The ML weapons and gear are really badass and worth the struggle IMO"
"the inability to traverse without massive dumps of stamina makes fighting anything a huge chore"
-I stick to the low lying areas till I get better gear. Sometimes I do climb up carefully looking for points of interest. Go slow at first.. there wont be any charging and running around kicking the *bleep* out of everything at first in the Mistlands. ( you will later)
" it's hard to tell whether or not you're running into one enemy or 4 until it's far too late."
-If you have headphones use them. You can generally hear everything before you see it. This was a game changer for me.
"having to place a million wisp torches just to have some sort of escape plan if things go south (which usually happens when a gjall sneaks up on me) but they only just barely put a dent in the fog."
-I never used torches.. see comment above regarding headphones and taking it slow at first.
"navigating boats in the island sections is a nightmare. trying to escape a gjall that's exploding your ship while going at 1speed because you can't see 10ft in front of your boat or make the turns necessary at higher speeds, or you have headwind, etc."
- I never sail in the mistlands. I go ashore in a neighboring biome such as the plains or better yet black forest and set up a Forward Operating base with a portal. Then I take another portal with me into the Mistlands.
I can't guarantee anything but once you get fully geared with ML gear and have conquered the Mistlands you will feel totally badass. I did. After your 1st run through and learning how to find things and learning how to tackle the mobs it's much more enjoyable.
After the ML boss its on to the Ashlands where there is no mist... but a punishing hellhole awaits. I just took down the AL boss today and it was a real thrill. Only the most badass of Vikings make it to Valhalla!
Skal! Good luck and don't give up. =)
PS: My favorite helpful ML items: Frost Arrows, Ooze Bombs ( swamp), Fire resist pots, AOE damage such as an Ategir or Iron Sledge. Frostner if you are a hammer build.
It's your entertainment. If you don't like it, then don't do it. This is entertainment, not a job. If you like the mist, then enjoy it. If you don't like the mist, then get rid of it.
I mean, I could try to convince people that like the mist to not like it, but why would I do that? Seems silly to me to try and convince people that they should like what I like. I'll just let you like what you want and make no effort to convince you to get rid of the mist.
