What's the point of metals preventing teleporting?
I love this game, haven't had such a blast in years.
But why the portal restriction on metals? What exactly is the reason for that?

The fact that you can't use a portal with it has a huge impact on gameplay.

Why would you spend hours and hours on building a beautiful base when eventually you have to abandon it in order to get more metals on another island?

Plus in order to process and use the metals you have to set up a smelter, a kiln, and the workbench upgrades on every new "base". Doesn't this send you into a huge item farming spiral?

For example the smelter requires surtling cores, but for every base you already "need" 2 portals which again need surtling cores, a material not too abundant.

So what's the reason behind it?
Is it maybe intentional, so that players are forced to play a "nomadic" playstyle rather than having a main base?
I just find this odd considering how intelligent the building system is, it basically encourages you to create sofisticated and beautiful buildings you get attached to.

If you think surtling cores are not abundant, you are obviously not very far into the game. You don't need 2 portals per base. You can always have a single portal or a few and rename them to wherever you need to go.

How about doing a forum search and reading through any of the hundreds of replies long discussions on this topic in them?

Or you can have one huge base with full workshop, several kilns and smelters, yet, transport your ores and metals via sea. Teleports in cabins for travel back for re-supply, repair, rest.
I've done such with iron. It was incredible experience.

The purpose of not allowing you to teleport with ore or metal is to make boats more useful.
Which hilariously fails because people will usually cheese it with a chest in another world lol.

basically to encourage people to use the cart and boats etc. Also if you could teleport metal it would be too easy, there are ways around it however

Maybe, but it was just an example. The question remains on why this restriction exists, because it obviously forces you into a certain playstyle which I find a pity considering how great the game is overall.

Then why you need cart and boat then, if you can just build portal?

Im aware that I can travel by sea every time i have like around 1 stack of ore in my inventory, but honestly that's just a chore. Traveling by sea back and forth for 1 stack seems like a total grinder to me. Might be fun for a while, okay, but not every time i create a new game / character. That's just repetitive.

think there is a explanation ingame, cant remember if its on a rune stone or if Hugin tells you (alot of fantasy games have large amounts of metal interfere with "magic"). i just use a boat for transport, then again i like traveling in this game. so no need to be a nomad, just bring your plunder home the viking way. if you want to bypass you can with a dump map, since your can carry stuff on you from map to map. know not everyone like the metal restriction, but i personally dont mind at all.

Then get more metal and sail with a bigger stack?
You wouldn't portal through with 1 ore every time right?

Because it is an easy (lazy) way to enhance the amount of time or "content". Very smart though.

Stupid question. Why does the portal exist in the first place then?
If they want us to use boats why make portals? Aha, let's just make a restriction for metals, one of the most important items ingame so they HAVE to use the boat despite the fact you can create portals.

Seriously by that logic, I could just transport everything by sea. No portals anymore.
Oobaneko 23/fev./2021 às 2:55
How devs can make game less gringy - decrease amount of needed metals for tools.

I'm using portals to go back into main base to re-supply, repair, build, relax, bring loot. In FOB I have minimum needed for "rested" status, bed, one or two storages, portal, dock. I'm getting metal, load it into boat storage. Filling it and set sail back. Otherwise, there is zero point in boats. Shaft can bring you to other shore easily.
One FOB in swamps, other in black forest small island. Gonna deforest it, if I will need a lot of wood.

Portals make routine, like re-supply, repair much less grindy, less need to worry about re-stocks in FOB. Yet, main goal - metals, are much bigger loot, so it needs special delivery. This is not routine - this is a goal of most expeditions.
