Just tank the ♥♥♥♥ out of it and hope their alpha isnt enough to crack it.
Edit: I'm definitely going to be scouting Uedama for a gatecamp/gank squad before I bring the Orthrus and Garmur through, but aside from that, is it a viable option to just not worry about the low chance of ganking and fly normally?
Again, I'm a ship collector - and the Machariel is, in my opinion, one of the coolest looking battleships in the game.
Do what incursion runners do when moving their battleships, equip it with a "travel fit". The idea is to have enough health/shields to survive long enough for CONCORD to come to your aid. Also have a damage control and agility mod in the lows to align faster so you spend less time sitting around a gate.
The MWD/cloak trick may also be of interest, as it enables one to align while cloaked:

The gankers who gank for income will usually want 1.5 to 2x the value of their ship (or group of ships) to offset the cost and risk of having nothing valuable drop.
In short: If killing you instantly takes a single shot, and you're carrying more than 60 mil, then anticipate someone trying for you. The easier target you make, the more likely you are to get hit.
So -never- autopilot.
They are looking at your fit and loot, right before they fire. Good luck
This guy has it. In a good null alliance, yes, you are at war with tons of folks, however, you have intel channels and a local chat to avoid being ganked. If it isn't blue, cloak up. They get bored and move on.
This is an example of the learning cliff taking affect. If you are getting ganked, avoid that area. If your told your fit is bad theres probably a reason. Leave hi sec and the game gets much better. Stay in hi sec and quit because you fail to learn the systems that make this game special.
