I remember playing the original game. Wasn't there a "rest" option where you could regain your hit points and spell points? If not it sure would be nice to have this feature.

Nope. You may be thinking of the REST spell, short for RESToration. It fully heals the party of all damage and conditions except death, stoning, withering and maybe possession (not 100% sure on this one). The only way to heal is various healing spells (cast by mages or via items), bard songs, or paying at the temple.

HP never regained on its own, unless you had certain magic items on you. Some versions of the game would allow SP to regenerate inside the AG, safe from monster interference. The remasters don't though.
