That being said, if you aren't standing mostly upright then all of that goes out the window. I cannot for the life of me holster/unholster anything consistently when crouched. It's easier when actually physically crouching but still really finnicky.
I'm using a WMR, and I think there's something up with the world scale as I feel noticeably smaller/shorter, not as much when I tried an Index. So I had to calibrate and alter my height A LOT just to make it feel right.
I'm 1.78 myself, and my floor is adjusted to be really "on the edge", so I couldnt have any offset (which game detected to be a whole 7cm/~3 inches), and changing the height to the rediculous value of 1.65 made the body feel right, but the arm reach was too short.
While playing around whith the height, I've noticed that it is simpler to holster into the pistol holsters if your in-game height is a tad bit less than your actual height. I guess it's because with lower in-game height hitboxes for the holsters are located lower (duh) and it may be possible to grab/holser weapons without shoving the controllers up your armpits.
Shoulder holsters are wonky, but I think that to properly holster you have to reach out and actually touch back-top of your shoulder to properly holster. Also, you have to do it slowly, since the weapons have thy weight and they might lag behind.
So, to holster the weapons behind your back you have to
1) reach behind your back *slowly* until you've touched your shoulder
2) release at this exact moment
To take out your weapons:
1) Reach for the same location
2) (!!!) Use your trigger/index finder to take out the weapon, even on Valve Index controllers
The most painful is the waist/belt holster, that I don't think was in the game from the get-go. To holster there, you have to REACH BEHIND YOUR BACK on waist level and release. It's tricky, because if you're running sideways your in-game body rotates quite a bit and you can't holster there that well, although it's easy to take out your weapon by just reaching for your thigh on your right side
I really hope this longpost helps, because I'm enjoying the holstering mechanics in this game and the game overall
Oddly I have no problem with those LOL For me it's the ones on your back (and other games seem to have similar issues) I have found that if I touch the controller to the top of my shoulder it seems to work OK, but at 52 years old, it's not exactly a pain free motion :P
I even reach across with my right hand to my left shoulder to get/put my axe away. You using lighthouses or something else? I have no issues with lighthouses. If you are using lighthouses, that's pretty odd. I'm 48 :)
Lighthouses and they are connected with a cable. I started trying the reach across method on my own last night and that works better but I'll still stick by my original comment, the holster "box" should be much more lenient as I don't see the reason for it not to be :D
But yeah, it needs to be way more forgiving, maybe even extra forgiving if it's the last item that was holstered in a particular slot. If it's anywhere in the general vicinity or the holster it was last in and not moving very fast when released, it gets pocketed.
Or maybe they could have a separate gesture for holstering items, similar to how telekinesis requires an extra trigger press. Like, let go with 3 fingers but keep your index finger touching (not pressing) the trigger, and this will holster if it's touching a holster but won't drop if it's not.
