Aggressive and Defensive stances
So I only played Galactic battlegrounds and in that defensive means they sit until a unit attacks them or is within visual range. Then they chase a certain number of tiles and return within like 0-3 tiles from original location.

In AOE2 DE they act almost just like aggressive except they tend to let themselves get killed. Is this intended? How do you manage units in large groups?

agressive means it will chase until out of vieuw and defensive means they attack in the area that they are standing

In my experience they stop chasing after some distance.
If you set the gather points the correct distance from enemy castles, units won't chase into caste fire. (It takes some practice to learn the correct distance and can be frustrating, because the distance they chase is quite long, but I can do it now. The tower range mod helps.)
Also if you tell some units to chase some other units, and if they're on defensive stance, they'll stop following that group of enemies when they've killed their assigned target unit. (Which can be frustrating tbh, and I try to put them on aggressive stance in that situation, if I remember to.)

Defensive does seem to be either bugged or changed from earlier versions of the game. Before, in AoE2 and HD, it meant staying within a certain number of tiles from the starting position when enemies were seen. In DE, defensive stance units will chase until no enemies are seen in any line of sight before returning. I've learned to live with patrols and stand ground stance, but I'd love the old defensive stance behavior back.

On a similar note, player-controlled attack moves will sometimes cause units to hesitate and do nothing while they pick new targets. Lost a few teams that should have won their fights to that.

I think you forgot to say that in defensive stance, units return to their original position. Or at least that's what I recall (not playing AoE2 right now).

I don't know what's up with your game, but mine works fine. Units will chase until a certain distance, then go back to their original position. Works exactly the same as always.

Units behaved differently in previous versions of the game when set to defensive.

Defensive stance not working

Hey guys I was wondering... In the new Age of Empires 1 DE update devs included different stances. One of them is no attack. If units are ordered to attack a target and then no attack is selected they don't stop attacking. Is that how it works in this game too, or units instantly stop attacking after said command?

Thanks. Then it's a bug I'll have to report.
The only use of no attack stance is probably sneaking units under your opponents radar

Wait

Do you mean
(1) Order to attack => then switch to no attack stance or
(2) Having no attack stance => order to attack?

(1) => Stop attacking
(2) => Follow your order and attack

They seem to work exactly as they always did. I'll prove it, in both DE and HD.

DE: https://streamable.com/1r0u1o
HD: https://streamable.com/q8o774

Note that in both games the units will return to within 1 tile of their starting position, every single time.
