Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is a short (around 4 hours) and fantastic cinematic ride through a confrontation and finding freedom between humans and apes. With a high replayability you only make decisions from the leader of the humans and the leader of the apes.

It left me back satisfied and ready for another playthrough to enjoy new decisions and of course the nice graphics. Well worth with a reduced price tag.

Just finished my first playthrough. It was actually a lot better than I expected and practically a dream come true for a Planet of the Apes fan! Obviously, it's closer to a movie than what people normally consider a video game, so be sure you know what you're in for. Now, this game isn't without problems. It'll never look as good as a $200M film, but it still looked pretty good for the most part, minus the animation slipping into the uncanny valley at times. I do wish they put more effort into the sound design because that was actually a much more jarring issue to me. The sound effects could have been richer, more enveloping, and the score didn't always transition seamlessly from scene to scene. As far as the story goes, I appreciate the fact that the final chapter's twist took me by surprise, but its pacing, especially in the 3rd and 4th chapter, feels a bit off. I can't really specify how without actually replaying it so I might do that in future runs. That said, while it may seem I'm being overwhelmingly negative about this game, it's only because it's easier to pick out what didn't work than to say what worked. In fact, my overall experience with this game was quite positive, and every Planet of the Apes fan should definitely give it a try. For how little it costs, I think the content you get is more than worth it. Meanwhile, I'm going to replay it in a completely different way just to see what happens.

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is a narrative adventure game or, in the other words, interactive movie. You'll have only 2 choices all the time and (rarely) "action button" which is a literally "to use or not" choice as well.
So, year 2027 and "winter is coming". A group of apes separated from Caesar long time ago and a group of people encountered same problem - not enough food for winter.

The game is rather short - my first playthrough was around 2 hours long. So it's obviously designed for multiple playthroughs ("19 hours across 14 endings" like stated on store page).
Even though, here comes the main problem of the game (at least from my point of view) - replayability is poor because you can't skip already seen scenes. I'm writing this review during my second playthrough (literally while playing), because the game is almost the same as on first playthrough.

I understood that the game is literally a railway on my first playthrough and choises affect only character relations and endings (mostly). Watching same videos for a second time, when you're making different decision is not really fun. And this is just a second playthrough, i'm not even talking about third one and so on.

Pros:

+ Nice graphics, good music and voiceovers. Good technical side in general (except non-existing option to skip already seen parts)

+ Interesting story in general, interesting endings.

+ I started second playthrough almost instantly after first one - the game is actually good enough that you're curious to discover other options.

Cons:

- As i said earlier - you can't skip anything in this game. So any additional playthrough is way more boring compared to previous one.

- Some scenes looked incredibly stupid even on my first playthrough. For example, i had "perfect" relations with character, but he still treats "me" like a crap.
On second playthrough "railway" looks even more ridiculous sometimes - absolutely opposite decisions lead to same video fragments, which is sometimes reasonable because of another character interrogation, but sometimes it happens "just because".

- Stupid fights, almost all of them. 50 apes can't "deal" with 10 people and so on. The fight which i've seen in the first ending i received was beyond ridiculous.

What else to say? Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is a good 2 hours game. It's also a decent 4 hours game. But i'm quite sure most of the players won't see even half of "19 hours across 14 endings" unless there will be an option to skip. This is about how a small detail could change a lot.

In 2011 the Planet of the Apes series was rebooted with the movies Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). 'Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier' continues the story of the conflict between apes and humans after War for the Planet of the Apes.

The game is an interactive movie requiring the player to occasionally make decisions. As a player you, therefore, most of the time do nothing except watching the story unfold.

The story is told from two perspectives. Jess just lost her husband and inherits his leadership of a small village or outpost. Bryn is a chimpanzee and the brother of Tola who's the eldest son of Khan, the leader of a group of apes. The story switches between both perspectives. As a player, you have to make decisions for Jess and Bryn.

The game has a dark setting and a somber mood. And while all actors do a truly fantastic job I felt bored for long stretches of the story and don't consider 'Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier' to be fun to play.

After finishing my first play-through, in which I attempted to find a peaceful outcome for both sides, I started a second play-through, acting as bad as I could, to unlock missing achievements. Interestingly my decisions didn't change the main story in any way. There were a few tiny changes in situations where I decided to kill an enemy instead of sparing him but it's pretty disappointing to discover that no matter how hard you try to change the outcome, you simply can't.

My main point of criticism of the game is the music. For almost the entire game the soundtrack consists of a combination of three long tones played on a cello, that in many cases prevent any possible upcoming excitement. Music and sound effects can turn mediocre or poor movies or games into something exciting. The soundtrack of 'Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier' turns the game into a less intriguing experience than it could have been. Considering the fact of how much work has been put into the game and how great the actors perform, this is a real shame.

As a fan of the movies, I wanted to play this game. 'Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier' is not an entire disaster and if you liked the movies you can play the game and decide for yourself.
For my part, the game was a disappointment and I will not recommend it because there are so many other games out there to better spend your time with.

Cons:
- monotonous, boring music
- the soundtrack simply doesn't support the story
- decisions don't change the major story
- boring
- no fun to play
- unsatisfying end of the story even with the best of all outcomes for both sides

It's like interactive movie made on U4 engine, great music, graphic and story that you can choose how it will go.

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is a great story told from two perspectives. The player must decide the fate of a tribe of apes and a group of humans, sometimes having to make tough choices and choose sides. Jess - "human leader" and Bryn - an ape torn between doing what is right and doing what is necessary, both struggle to keep their loved ones safe. Their actions might lead to bloody war or fragile peace, depending on their choices. I really enjoyed the game, although it did feel more like a movie sometimes. I also loved the music, especially the main menu track. <3

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is the perfect fusion between film and video games as it moves away from other games of the franchise and focuses on the narrative. In this way, it offers us a completely different point of view of the war between apes and humans.

It's one of those games, narrative adventure game or in the other words, an interactive movie.
Very entertaining so far if you're a fan of the Planet of the Apes movies.

You do have choices to make that impact the output of the story so really looking forward to see how it ends and has a certain degree of replayability.
