is it me or are heroes super overpowered in romance mode?
I just took a castle by attack moving with guan yu and his drinking buddy and kind of just let my army sit back.

Start campaign in realism mode. It's default set to romance...which is basically OP leaders and generals.

Even for Romance, they seem overpowered to me.

Yeah, Romance mode is kind of stupid. It basically means that people like Cao Cao and Liu Bei, who naturally have brokenly OP generals like Guan, Zhang and the Xiahou's from the start end up dominating, no matter the advantages you have over them. I don't mind Guan and Zhang being stronk, but generals in Romance mode need to be nerfed.

Why? So Guan and Zhang can dominate everyone even more easily? Your generals are supposed to counter other generals. How are you going to counter Guan and Zhang and stuff when you nerf all other generals to the ground?

Play records mode if it bothers you.

I've played the game more, it's much more tame once you have high tier units to pit against the heroes instead of just peasant/militia.

They are extremely overpowered. I like the idea of duels, but the characters are OP in many ways, or just generally unbalanced in others. Guan Yu being beaten by no name officers, constantly having his ability parried by that same no name. Zhang Yan on his own, 3v1, killing hundreds. It's silly.

Don't get me wrong, it could be a great mode, but it needs some serious balance changes. No doubt a mod will be released soon after the workshop is opened.

Records feels really good though.

Eww I hate people who thinks they need to be balance or nerfs. Learn to have 2 Stacks of army and just Archers down on them or go into a Duel.
Who cares if you lose Tons of Army or generals just Recruit news ones. Thats the point of the game. Its annoying when people demand nerfs/Balance just because they want to Steam Roll everything with a Single Stack army with no Consequences.

That seems like overkill. I just have one of the lancer cav and a general attack them. Generals seem to do a lot worse vs cav for some reason, probably cause they can't aoe them as easily, can't cycle charge them, get charged when they try to retreat, and the cav have anti-large.

Or I just run around gooning them with my generals. Lu bu is the only general in the game that didn't die instantly when I gooned him with a sentinel scholar and champion. He lost 3/4th hp during the scholar debuff and sentinel buff, then basically 1 shot the sentinel. But honestly I just wanted to see what would happen or I would have just used a spear cav again.

The easiest kills though were cause I was playing bandit queen. And she's got 2 damage abilities, and 1 of them is ranged. So she just throws a poison spear at them, accepts duel before they tick down from poison damage, then use the 15k damage ability and they die instantly. Even if the 15k gets parried, she's just gonna win anyways. The poison spear is on like a 30 second cd and I often didn't have time to use it twice before all 3 of their generals were dead.

I think generals are only overpowered in player hands, or vs large groups of low tier infantry. But it was like that in Warhammer too. Your general seems super powerful while you're fighting those peasant mobs and zombies, but then a hard hitting armor piercing single entity unit comes along and they just get wrecked. Or even just some anti-large cav or high tier spears. The difference is in Warhammer there were items that let your general just tank through those and kill them anyways.

I will be honest, I haven't touched Record mode.
However as far as I see from Romance mode, unless you are Lu Bu or other starting legendary generals, the normal generals, even if legendary, aren't really that OP. They usually at most take about 200-300 kills. It's actually not that OP. I mean, a militia cav units can kill more.

Record mode's generals can definitely kill more with cycle-charging, And I read that there are skills that can increase the bodyguard size to 100 man.

When you see that Romance mode you only have 1 model general, however, they need to size up to be comparable to 50-100 elite guard troops. That is why you feel the generals in romance is OP, because they are supposed to replace an OP last tier cav unit.

Also, while in record mode, generals are more vunerable, in romance mode, generals are actually easier to be sniped. They are alone, so it's really easy to swarm them with elite troops, or cycle-charge with mutiple cav units. Or keep them busy with duels. It's really easy to counter them if you know what to do, well, with AI I mean. Even Lu Bu can be dealt with by 3 tiger leopard cav units cycle-charging him.

They have a clear impact on the game, however, they can not solely win games. The art is building an army around your Heroes. Dueling is a high risk high reward choice. However, locking Heroes in a duel can be quite efficient with a high vitality champion, for example one that can duel for a minute against a Legendary Hero at least so your army can do the heavy lifting. You can always run your champion of the the battlefield without a penalty. A medium lancer attachment can destroy a level 5 decked out Legendary, within his ranks in the center of your army they can give an definite edge.

A classic rule of Total War in MP was often winning 2 out of 3 flanks. The two outer flanks for an envelope. Or a flank and the center. One of the flanks is often heavily contested. Over committing to a flank generally makes you lose. Use heroes to control flanks, or stop heavy pushes. Just to trow out some basic ideas of course.

Nobody said they wanted that. Don't put words in other people's mouths.

So much wrong in thos post....

A medium lancer can't do crap to a hero... what u smoking??? 1 aoe attack and its dead. Generals can solo armies its a fact... on legendary the enemy heroes are insane the sentinels 100% buff just reks anything they are the best heroes by far both for troops and duels.

Best way to cheese this game is build 6 spear men with shields 4 crossbows 2 trebs 4 cav and 2 swords. Along with the specialised heroes to match and just let the enemy come to you and rek them... crossbows reach half the map lol... 250 range jesus. And trebs with fireballs just explode everything. Speamen with shields last forever for you to flank and can actually kill lords since they never dismount lol...

Overall boring combat and never send your cav vrs heroes... they 1 shot them specially if blobbed around them.

Also generals help you do that. An ai scholar is literally just fodder. A player scholar wins you the line and debuffs 3 enemy generals who you kill instantly. An ai vanguard just runs into some cav or your champion and dies. A player vanguard cycle charges through their infantry and racks up 100s of kills. My generals average like 100 kills a fight including killing their generals, and at best got like 400. Other than lu bu I don't think I've fought an ai general that hit 100 kills.

If people wanted to steamroll with a single stack, they'd call for buffs. Look at Warhammer. You can steamroll with a single character. That's what powerful generals does.
