You need to install this patch https://www.patches-scrolls.de/patch/4556/7/74922/download
then you enter your code, but make sure to unchech "activate now" or somethink like that. And after that your game will be activated, and you can check file integrity to go bach to previous version.
Thank you so much. I opened the forums to post and this solved my issue as well.
where do i install this patch because it says it cant find the two world directory
Interestingly, according to other posts for this game, the serial keys are not supposed to be required; but were after I patched the game.
I emailed the devs and let's see if I get a response in a week.

there are 2 fixes
Thank you so much! Your guide is perfect! Simple, easy to follow, and from what I can see, saved me tons of frustration! Thanks again for saving the rest of us!
The problem is Steams issued cdkeys are not being taken up by the new automated CDkey input method with the Two Worlds II client running the 2.07.3 Steam patch (see note at bottom of the page)
(Getting the CDkeys into the game)
patch 2.0.5 https://www.patches-scrolls.de/patch/4556/7/74922/download is a patch prior to the DRM being removed which will let you manually add your Steam cdkeys to get the client started without the "activation waiting for steam purchase key" error message from the 2.07.3 patch
download and install https://www.patches-scrolls.de/patch/4556/7/74922/download (it needs to be executed from the same drive as two worlds II install)
(CDkey management)
(right click, Two Worlds II from your Steam library ->manage->CD Keys to get access to your game licence codes (you can leave the cdkey box open and "alt+tab" to task switch between the cdkeys and the Two Worlds II client.
(CDkey input bug)
start the client, add the CDKey for Two Worlds II. And you need to "DOUBLE LEFT CLICK on OK" when adding CDkeys within the Two Worlds II client (as it's a bit bugged and the first click wont register). once you've passed the key input box, then uncheck register now and click internet activation, which will add the cdkey (serial key/registration key) lines into the registry, which is the important bit.
(DLC CDkey input bug)
IF you have any of the single player campaigns DLC's installed (pirates of the flying fortress, POFF/call of the tenebrae, COTT/shatered embrace, SE) after adding your Two Worlds II cdkey you can add the DLC CDKeys, it's ask for the keys in succession (POFF/COTT/SE) (pirates of the flying fortress is the first additional KEY it'll ask for, but wont ask for the cdkey by it's name "POFF", which can be confusing as it just looks like the clients not registered the base game key, the other DLC keys it'll ask for by name)
(Patch roll back 2.0.5 to 2.07.3)
once the CDkeys are added via the 2.0.5 patch you can (right click two worlds 2 from your game library->properties->local files "verify integrity of the game files") to reinstall the 2.07.3 steam patch.
Aslong as the cdkeys (serial/registration keys) are present in the registry "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Reality Pump\TwoWorlds2\SerialKey" the 2.07.3 patch will play.
its probably a good idea to export "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Reality Pump\TwoWorlds2\SerialKey" from the registry after you've added the keys via the 2.0.5 patch (use regedit)
note
i tried running steam client and Two Worlds II client via admin just gives a null (no cdkey passed) error message instead of "activation waiting for steam purchase key"
note
CDkeys need to be processed by the topware registration server and converted in to serial and registration keys
dev post on deleting regkeys is likely for earlier attempt at tying the client to the steam platform, you can delete the regkey "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Reality Pump\TwoWorlds2\SerialKey" upto the "\Reality Pump\TwoWorlds2\" and the game will just re-add the config regkeys under TwoWorlds2 (you'd need to modify a setting from the config interface in the client for it to add them though, as it loads from a internal default config "as in" it'll load the client without any config regkeys), but you would need to reuse the 2.0.5 patch to re-add the needed CDkey serial/registration registry keys
Edit
A day later stopped showing a server error and allowed me to register
