Kanova Standalone Development is Ending
It’s a new year and time for us to give an update regarding Kanova. I’ve got both some bad news and some good news. Unfortunately we are ending development on Kanova as a standalone product. This has been an exciting project to work on here at Foundry. The work Vilya Harvey has done with ADF technology has been nothing short of exceptional.

Kanova started as a research project with the goal of investigating the viability of volumetric sculpting/modeling in a VR environment. From a research perspective it was massively successful. Sculpting was of course a natural place to start regarding manipulation of volumes. However, bringing a new sculpting-dedicated application to market alongside our existing suite of 3D tools is not strategically advantageous for us. It also does not provide existing users of our products with the workflow-elevating cohesion we want to provide.

The feedback we received during and after Kanova’s public release 9 months ago was very useful to both our technical and market research. We’re always tinkering with new ideas and technology behind the scenes here at Foundry and being able to involve artists in that process has been great. Thanks to all of you who voiced your opinions, good or bad it has been a help to us.

Now onto the good! Kanova will remain available in its current state. We don’t want to take it away from folks who are using it. Furthermore, this may be the end of development on Kanova but it is not the end of development for ADF. ADF has been very challenging technology to develop. It was very data-heavy and presented early performance and surface-quality challenges. This also taught us many things about DCC VR development which is no small challenge. We managed to resolve these problems well beyond our own expectations. We now we have technology that we know is commercially viable even if the form it takes in the future isn’t specifically Kanova.

Does this mean we might see the technology integrated into Modo? As a Modo user, I would really like that.
