Restoring from Backup
I just bought Legendary Edition and am itching to play it. Unfortunately, we have terrible bandwidth caps up here.

I have a friend who has the normal version + all the DLC. Would I be able to use his backup to install my Legendary Edition?

I used to back up my Steam game(s) by copying the steamapps\Common\skyrim and steamapps\skyrim.gcf to another drive. At the time I was unsure if the built-in backup would include all the mods installed, or uninstalling would delete them. About 20 minutes ago I just restored my non-legendary version from a manual backup that I made last year (closed Steam, copied files, restarted Steam). Since it was an old backup, Steam needed to convert it to a newer format which only took about 5-10 minutes.

Earlier this week I copied steamapps\Endless Space over to another computer. I opened Steam, installed the game via the Library, and Steamed checked the files after the install wizard was done.

You could always give it a try. If Steam doesn't like any of the distributed files in the game folder, it will just download and overwrite them. I doubt that any account specific data would be included in the game folder. The most you may get, if it works, is your friend's saved games and mods.

I know I can restore from other people's backups, but I'm specifically wondering if the normal Skyrim edition backup including all DLC is equivalent to a backup of Skyrim Legendary Edition.

Thanks for your response anyway :)

In case anyone else is searching for the answer to this.. the answer appears to be yes. I purchased Skyrim Legendary Edition for a friend, and was able to use my backup of Skyrim + Dawnguard + Hearthfire to install the game on her computer. Steam then downloaded about 1GB of data which I'm presuming was the Dragonborn DLC.

So in short, yes you can use a backup of the original version to install the legendary version.
