Go left! *Goes right*
Well I finally got around to "piloting" a dragon and I can say I've rarely been so disappointed. Take off is fine, landing, telling my dragon to attack something is even fine. Steering or using my own magic though appears to be extremely fickle.

edit: Really surprsied I didn't have all the errors other people did. Worst I encountered was the occasional runtime error.

You can't steer the Dragon, that's probably why it's so difficult.

Yep. It's not a mount, as in you can use it. It's for fighting and fast travel, and that is just plain useless, for all but spellcasters. And even then it's bad.

Only spells I've ever gotten consistent results from are lightning spells, since they're instant. No projectile to inherit inertia and such. Even then, the range does not lend themselves to use from atop a dragon.

Entire mechanic is dreadfully disappointing in my opinion.

Command Dragon by rongphale

I have not tried it myself but from the description it sounds really promising.
