is it possible?
any thoughts on the viability of creating a pure mage character ala D&D for play in skyrim? Lightly armored, lightly armed (dagger) and relying only on spellcraft to battle enemies and make it's way around the questlines in the game. I have my reservations due to the scaling of damage for spells and the time it takes to raise skill levels to take advantage of perks. but i welcome all thoughts on the matter

It's easy to play all mage. My first character was all mage. With conjuration and dual casting on destruction for stun effect, only a surprise arrow can really kill me on harder levels. And maybe certain bosses.

I did an all destruction and restoration mage while carrying a bow. That was all I used for the entire game, so it's entirely possible to make whatever character type you want.

early game play will be very tedious and u might die quite a bit if u rely solely on magic as magic dmg blows early on compared to mana use.

by saying all destruction and restoration...or conjuration and dual casting..does that mean all your perks were spent completely on those skill trees? did you focus on fire, frost or shock or did you use all 3? how did you allocate your level ups? did you focus solely on manna? or did you pump some into health and stamina too?

damage reduction is alot lower as a mage, with maxed out alteration (not using dragonhide) you'll end up with like 60% damage reduction IF your shield spell is up and doesnt fall. it's magicka intensive, even with maxed out regen and extra magicka

alternatively

with smithing and a few points in smithing magic items and say light or heavy armors you can practicaly cap out physical damage reduction. cast a shield spell for good measure. with the unique artifact magic resist equip you can end up with a very robust charecter using that method.
+ theres a shrine that reduces the weight of equiped armor like the light and heavy armor perks, and a alyied artifact lets you use 2 shrines similtanously so add a portion of spell absorbtion aswell

as a uber charecter smithing > alteration

if you want a different play experience use what you didnt on your other play throughs

sounds good.... i was going to use smithing and enchanting to craft light armors so i don't have to us up a lot of level ups on stamina

Totally possible, my current char is a level 77 pure mage, playing on Expert with Deadly Dragons installed. Just avoid being hit by summoning creatures to serve as meat shields, and you're good to go. Didn't even need a companion after the first levels.

Only downside is that you can't fight on horseback, no armor or weapon and spells don't work.

You don't need armor. Alteration spells along with the perks give you more armor than you could possibly wear and they're weightless. Mages are fun because they're kind of weak in the beginning, but then you hit a "break-over" point at some junction in your travels and the dragonborn becomes a godlike force of nature.

When I played I spend the most of my perks in the entire destruction, restoration, and archery trees. I did spend a few in some of the other mage trees like conjuration and enchantment. Plain and simple, spend the perk points where you feel your character needs them the most. There really are no limitations to it. I actually didn't smith at all on my mage character, I enchanted robes that I bought or found. You could even create a battlemage character that is balanced in magic and weapon combat if you so choose too.

Nah, you only get 300 armor with Ebony Flesh and the perks, while you need 567 to cap the reduction damage: the only spell giving you more than that, Dragonhide, doesn't long last enough and takes too long to cast in a tough fight. But that's not a problem, true. Just summon two Dremora Lords between you and whatever is coming for you, and you don't get hit.

The only reason to wear armor is to have some protection while on horseback during long rides when you can't recast spells without getting off your horse, but that's not really necessary.

My first char was a conjuration restoration mage in light armor. The fact is that he was very versatile and i found myself few times unprepared. Of cours we all have mistakes of those which kill us, but that's another story :P

I personally found conjuration / destruction the 'easiest' to level without dying too much. Though I always find that the old dagger has to come out at some point.
