alternatively
with smithing and a few points in smithing magic items and say light or heavy armors you can practicaly cap out physical damage reduction. cast a shield spell for good measure. with the unique artifact magic resist equip you can end up with a very robust charecter using that method.
+ theres a shrine that reduces the weight of equiped armor like the light and heavy armor perks, and a alyied artifact lets you use 2 shrines similtanously so add a portion of spell absorbtion aswell
as a uber charecter smithing > alteration
if you want a different play experience use what you didnt on your other play throughs
Only downside is that you can't fight on horseback, no armor or weapon and spells don't work.
When I played I spend the most of my perks in the entire destruction, restoration, and archery trees. I did spend a few in some of the other mage trees like conjuration and enchantment. Plain and simple, spend the perk points where you feel your character needs them the most. There really are no limitations to it. I actually didn't smith at all on my mage character, I enchanted robes that I bought or found. You could even create a battlemage character that is balanced in magic and weapon combat if you so choose too.
The only reason to wear armor is to have some protection while on horseback during long rides when you can't recast spells without getting off your horse, but that's not really necessary.
