pop-up: "Scanning for Steam games updates"

Hi. I'm trying to start Skyrim, but instead of the usual Skyrim start menu (the pop-up that Steam uses to check for updates to our subscribed mods), I'm getting a pop-up that says, "Scanning for Steam games updates." I've never gotten that pop-up before. I didn't think much of it at first. But . . . it just sits there . . . forever (hours, anyway, while I was away from my desk). If I close this new pop-up and try opening the game again, I just get the new pop-up again. In effect, I cannot access Skyrim at all via the regular Steam button.

I tried opening the Creation Kit, too, and I got the same pop-up. So I can't get into the CK, either.k

Fortunately, I have SKSE (SKyrim Script Extender) installed, and I was able to open the game that way. But I obviously need access to the regular Steam controls, too. And I know of no way to open the CK w/o using the Steam button.

Can anybody help me with this?

[Aside: I'd like to just ask Steam tech support about my problem, but the 2 questions I've sent them about other problems have only gotten stock replies that just repeated the standard, general info that Steam uses to describe it's features. For example, I asked how to opt out of Steam Guard--which I know can be done--and I just got a note telling me how wonderful Steam Guard was and advising me not to opt out. Well, in my case, Steam Guard requires that I use an e-mail confirmation of my identity every single time I log in to the Steam Community. Steam does that with me because my machine clears all of the assorted cookies after I log off. I can understand why Steam needs to place cookies when I'm using the Steam site, but I do not understand why Steam needs to place cookies that remain on my machine even when I am not using Steam. No other web site of any kind has ever asked to do this. I can't help but think that Steam is wanting to track the players when not playing, and, really, I don't think that's any of Steam's business.]

@ The STEAM Guard Question.
Just disable STEAM gaurd from your STEAM Client's settings.

Also, the "cookie" is stored within the STEAM folder, not in your browser folder [as I also clean my internet temp folders and cookies once a week to free up space]. What I have noticed is, if you input the code for STEAM Guard and DO NOT properly shutdown STEAM [ie you shutdown the computer and it will auto-exit STEAM], then it will keep asking for the code.

What you need to try is to input the code, let it validate, then exit steam once it finally loads. Once you relaunch STEAM, it shouldn't ask you anymore for the code on that computer [regardless of your browser having cookies].

THANK YOU very much . . . I will look again, but, no fooling, I've been looking at my Steam account settings and I can't find anything that might let me disable Steam Guard . . . I might not even be looking at the right page, but I'm not seeing anyplace else to look. . . . Could you point me in the right direction on the Steam Guard control?

Yes! That was the control for Steam Guard that I remembered. But . . . I don't have that page anymore . . . Steam updated itself a couple of months ago, and the "new" Steam give me the page you see below instead. I'm surprised that anybody still has the old Steam pages. But maybe I just can't find the right page here?? Please tell me if I'm way off here. (Normally, I like looking around sites like Steam and getting the settings the way I like them, but I keep having problems with Steam and it's kind of wearing me out.)

That looks like the STEAM Website.
I believe you have to disable it from the Client.

Thanks a lot. I'm sort of bummed just now. I don't know how to do what you're telling me. I'll see if I can do a search for it. First thing, though, I really need to get this problem with the "Scanning for Steam games updates" pop-up sorted out. If I can't, I think my time with Skyrim is pretty much over. (I already bought a 2nd copy of Skyrim just to fix something that went wonky with Steam--I figured it'd be easier to just buy a new game than to try and get Steam to fix anything.) Now I'm thinking that I really need more experience with some of the tech areas to play the game and not worry about things going wrong.

But it was good to get your posts about the Steam Guard mess. Appreciate it. :o)
