Can't Choose My Speech Response

Any time I try to choose something other than the first option when speaking to someone, it doesn't work and still chooses the first option (which can be super detrimental!!). I've tried choosing with my mouse and with the keyboard with the same results. Is there some other way?

Probably one of the most common complaints about Skyrim. Are you a mod user? If so there's a mod fix for this problem that makes a big difference:

I'm so new to gaming I haven't downloaded any mods. The last time I played it seemed to work properly, though. If I download this mod without having any others, will it make a difference? Thanks for the reply!

Read the mod description. It says exactly what the mod does.

Also, if you're new to modding, I'd recommend reading up online how to do it. Installing mods may be a bit complex to newcomers.

i had the same problem so i pressed "Ctrl Alt and Del" to open up task manager (because i can't seem to get out of the game via the Windows button when i just wanna check something then get back into game)
then i looked for an answer (which happens to be this one) and read stuff, but i don't like the idea of using a mod (i'm new to theses elder scroll games too) so i went back into game and it was working fine
