Armors and you.
So having dabbled a bit with Skyrim in the past, it never really hooked me like Morrowind. I guess this is partly down to the fact that I don't really like the higher level stuff. I quite fancy the Steel and Nightingale sets, but for me to actually bother with the game again i'd like to know the following:

Will using fairly poor armor (in terms of comparisin to top tier anyway) like Steel and Nightingale get me my ass handed to me repeatedly, or will a balanced character using said armor be fine?

I really, really, really don't like the look of either Dragon armor set and the Daedric is just.. well.. not my cup of tea. Glass looks weird too.. anyway, nonsense aside; will it be a big pain in the arse to use crap armors?

I know of some Armour that will interest you...in my workshop. But I'll say no more.
you can use what armor you want aslong as you can get it to the armor rating cap wich is 667 no point geting more than that
If you level Smithing up and take the Steel, Advanced Armor and Arcane Blacksmith Smithing perks, you can come pretty close to the armor cap with Steel or Nightingale. Guzzle a Blacksmith potion or two to increase the armor rating further. You should be ok.

There's also an exploit using Alchemy some might recommend, but imho it's really not necessary.

Huh, I didn't know you could improve on the Nightingale stuff. Don't suppose it's possible to find unenchanted versions of it too, hm?
there are unique armours in the game..happy hunting :)

Not in Vanilla (unmodded) - but if you search Workshop or Nexus there are craftable unenchanted versions about.

Alright.. here's another question then. Let's say I get my nightingale set at lvl 10 and I upgrade it with fairly low skill. Now, does this prevent me from upgrading it further later on and am I stuck with crap enchants due to being low lvl upon getting it? :S

So many odd things that the game doesn't explain very well..
You have the choice of improving your Smithing Skill...and every point you put on your Smithing, a new Armour type is unlocked AND...(what it doesn't explain that clearly) you can temper your weapons and Armour another level...increasing Damage and Armour Rating further more..
But it depends on if you put your level up points on Smithing to gain this Armour improving increase ability....

Also..as you level up, the Armour rating Automatically increases with you....

Upgrading early won't effect your ability to upgrade the armor rating, but the enchant is dependant on the level you aquire it. This page shows the difference:

Hope that made sense. no coffee...

Aha.. so if I upgrade the Nightingale with for example 30 smithing skill, i could do it again at 60 70 and 100?

Yes.
Course! So long as you put the points on..you will notice at the workbench, it says you do not have the required skill to improve this....that is when you level up, pop a point on the next skill in the tree, then the workbench lets you improve it..

You will notice improvement categories such as Fine, Superior, exquisite, epic, Legendary....These are the different increments of your improvement skill as you put points on your smithing...you got nothin to worry about..check the link Stabby's given you :)

Aha! So I could actually run around the countryside with a mod that offers an unenchanted Nightingale set, a badass crossbow and a big honkin' dragonbone greatsword and kill things for ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles! Thanks a lot of the answers xD

Using enchanted rings, amulets, armor with all Grand souls gems used for increasing your Smithing skill, can push your armor level to extraordinary levels even if already at Legendary.
