How exactly does the Black Star work?

If I read it correctly, it permanently stores a captured soul, so if I killed Ulfric, his soul is forever stored in the gem, letting me use it an unlimited number of times without having to recharge it?

Is that correct?

Wouldn't that make soul trapping weapons effectively useless since I have a gem that doesn't lose soul even after I use it?

I believe it can still be depleted by using it to recharge weapons. But it just won't disappear like the rest do.

I didnt know soul gems disappear after using them. I thought they just get empty, ready to be re-filled.

I had Ulfric Stormcloak as permanent zombie follower. He was a useless brat in life, but useful to Empire and Skyrim in death. Guy even used shouts against our enemies. It was occasionally quite hillarious, when fighting against remnant stormcloak patrols.

I had Galmer and Legate Rikke as a permanent Dead Thrall separate times when I done the Imperial Legion and the Stormcloaks- some reason Rikke glitches out the most during the times reanimated with the gear given to her it completely despawns from her inventory and completely was lost during fast travel. Dam these stupid Legionnaires, can't even hold their loyalty placed even after death. >_>

I killed a bandit, captured his soul, have the black star in my inventory which is empty, and got a message that I didn't have a soul gem big enough for the soul. What am I doing wrong? Please help!!!
