Re-loading is, in my OCD eyes, cheating still... but it is the best way of balance. You messed up through incompetence, therefore face the punishment of having to do it again; cleansing purity in the gamer's soul.....
One could go into creation kit and mess with the NPC's... but you really don't want to currupt your game by making NPC's essential...
>_>
Make a copy of Lydia, and leave the original in Dragonsreach. Make your copy essential (cannot die). Or just play the game normally :P Or download a follower mod and forget Lydia :D
Couple of snippets from a discussion in the link below
----------
help <follower name> 4
setessential <base ID> <1/0>
1 = immortal
<base ID> = the number you'll find from the first command
----------
Have you tried using this console code:
setessential <base ID> 1
where Base ID: Lydia = 000A2C8E (just an example)

open the console and then click on Lydia's still warm corpse. Type "Resurrect 1" into the console and hit enter. Then close the console and watch Lydia twitch back into life and stand up like nothing happened.
Generally speaking, followers will only die if you kill them, or occasionally if they get poisoned or have bleeding damage, or set off a trap. Unfortunately, they do often seem hell-bent on getting in between you and enemies, so 'avoid hitting Lydia' often becomes pretty impossible.
If you find out her... I can never remember if it's RefID or Base ID but I think Ref, you can enter
prid [lydia's ID]
moveto player
(i.e. press enter after her ID) and that should bring her (or sometimes her dead body if she died and you didn't realise...) to you. I've never noticed any issues with doing this, but bear in mind that using console commands a lot *can* cause unforseen problems in your game.
Was about to suggest the same commands. I think it's her RefID that you need to use but I haven't used that command myself more than twice and it was a while ago.
so gnewna in game when i do that prid [lydia's ID] moveto player, is it just one line or 2 ? i did try it after looking thru previous postings, and the code they used didnt work or i didnt type it in right ? \
You can also move yourself to your follower, I can't remember the command for that, and I don't really advise it because sometimes it takes you to really weird places (like once Lydia and Meeko vanished in the middle of Markarth and I teleported myself to them out of curiosity and was in the middle of the ocean!) but sometimes it's interesting to save, try it out just to see where on earth they got to, and then reload and bring them to you...
She *ought* to have been brought out of Meridia's temple with you, that's odd that she wasn't - sometimes you can fix missing followers by fast travelling or waiting an hour/entering a building (fast travel more likely to work in this case - just nip to Solitude if you've been there already - if they've just got lost outside then either of the other two ought to work.)
link witha easier command for getting lost followers back,
